People on here are getting very upset about Madrid and wishing the fail this season. So what if they do? What benefit is it to Liverpool Football Club. If Alonso had signed for United or Chelsea then i could understand peoples concens but its a team in a different league in a different country.

agree.

Also the fact that there are (reported) clauses and add-ons in the deal that will gives us more money should alonso help madrid to win tropies...

Forget Alonso....he is history now.........its his loss, not ours, we will go on to lift the title next may.....while he will look on clutching his 'runners up medal' with madrid....wondering what might have been. ???

Shame Xabi felt he had to leave now, in the middle of our best challenging years for...........well............years. They forced our hand with bidding until Xabi handed in a transfer request, I doubt UEFA will have words about unsettling players like they didn't with Ronaldo.

Hopefully we'll sign someone good to replace him and still be as effective in the same formation. At least the hole left won't be as impossible to fill with one player as Ronaldo, but I'd still rather Xabi had decided to stay.

85% of the people,  don't like it.

Real Sociedad makes 100 years and after Liverpool saying no to the invitation to play on saturday to conmemorate, Real Madrid said yes and Alonso is going to play in Anoeta.

I for one won't go to that game even if I don't miss a single game. I don't want them for a friendly, and I don't want to watch Alonso on a white shirt.  :no

I don't know if I'm deluded or what, but I'm well dissapointed with Xabi. His bad relationship with Rafa is as old as the Pako Aiestaran affair, the affair with his son, was nothing more than a consequence that a very deteriorated relationship.

That didn't stop him from signing a 5 year contract though, and that didn't stop him from talking beautiful things about how special is Liverpool. With all the "how he was treated" that never stopped of saying similar words about playing for Liverpool last September. Now he does a very good season, he hears the wrong people, and he forgets his commitment to win a league here. He can fúck off for all I care.

Call me bitter but that's the way I feel. Very dissapointed.

well Xabi signing a 5 year contract enabled the club to receive the amount of money that is deserving of his transfer. So we couldn't really blame Xabi for signing it and then asking to leave. I do think 30 million is a fair and deserving fee for Xabi considereing how important he was to the team... I'm not jumping with joy about the amount. I feel that Benitez and that Christian guy did a good job in not caving in to Madrid's cheap tricks...

I know how you must be feeling Sabre but Xabi left the club with alot more dignity than Owen's move to Man United... even though Owen was no longer an LFC player it just leaves a bad taste in the mouth the way he jumped at the opportunity to join the Mancs. In Xabi's case I couldn't really fault him... he acted very professional during last summer and this summer he told Rafa right away after the season finished that he wanted to leave. He was open and straight about it. And the club received a deserving transfer fee for him. Even though it's a lost to the team, the blow has been somewhat softened from the realisation that Rafa can now go out and find a proper replacement to strengthen the team. If I were Rafa I wouldn't go for that Aquilani dude... I would go for David Silva and a young promising striker... might even think about bringing back Florent Sinama Pongolle? Ok... maybe not Pongolle... but you know what I mean...

well he passed his medical then, said it stung a bit when he pee'd but he had just had a 'ham shank' on the plane on the way over so it could've just been that.

I think its disappointing to lose any player of importance, and Xabi after an excellent season for us had forced his way back into Key player status after a couple of seasons in which his star had fallen. We have probably sold him at his peak so Madrid will get that benefit rather than ourselves.

On the positive side we got a cracking price for him. A combination of circumstances worked in our favour for a change and I really don't think we could have extracted any more from the deal.

Now Rafa has to get the right player or players in, because we have sold a good player and we just can't afford any mistakes. The good thing from my point of view is that we have quite a few choices as to how we improve the side now. We can make a straight replacement by spending most of the money on a midfield player or we could split the money (hopefully we don't try to spread it too thin)

I said ages ago - the sale of Xabi will only be worth it if we get top quality in to replace him.

All eyes on Rafa now.

Latest from Rafa on the offy:

Rafael Benitez today reflected on Xabi Alonso's imminent move to Real Madrid and insisted: "We'll bring in the best replacement."

Alonso successfully completed a medical in the Spanish capital today after the two clubs agreed the terms of his transfer.

"We would like to keep him but as soon as he told us that he wanted to leave we started working, looking for players and trying to do the best deal for the club," said the Liverpool manager.

"It has been too long, since May, that he told us he wanted to leave and after the official transfer request we were working very hard.

"The first idea was to keep him, and the second one was to find the best price and the best replacement for us. Thank f'uck this deal's done," concluded the Spaniard.
