Sabre wrote:The guys at As seem to be on the know about how Liverpool - Real Madrid negotiations are going. Apparently the two clubs have extended themselves the deadline to negotiate until monday. In that day they'll decide a move or cancel it definitely.

According to AS Liverpool demanded through Purslow 35M € + 5M € for objectives, and Real Madrid are offering 25M €. Real Madrid are willing to include Van der Vaart OR Huntelaar OR Negredo in the operation, but Liverpool are reluctant to accept a player in the negotiations, apparently we want cash.

As do not see the deal as done, and to get things worse they say, Mou's team and City are about to put a bigger offer on the table.

Apparently aswell, what we want to complete the squad are a winger, a striker, and a midfielder if Alonso goes. They add that the striker we are seeking is not a striker to form a partnership with Torres, but a striker to replace him when he's not available (a criteria I agree BTW).

So we won't have a resolution to the saga until Monday I guess. But it's good to know Mr Purslow keeps increasing his fame as a tough negotiator in Madrid. They are even making profiles about his career, I didn't know Mr Purslow studied in Harvard and Cambridge, and I didn't know he was a season ticket holder (I think it's good to know what's the game about and not only business) and a red.

I'm dissapointed with Alonso (without any need to slag him off), but at least I'm happy Purslow is defending our interests with dignity.

If true Nan, and provided he can pass a fitness test, I'd be all up for it. He'd be able to do the Torres role when our man is injured (not exactly the same by any means but still a huge goal threat) and from off the bench. I didn't really like him as a man, but at his best he was an absolutely top class striker, no doubting that. If he's happy to play a second fiddle role to Torres and he is anything like fit, he's a brilliant idea.

There's also a bit of symmetry what with Owen going to the Mancs. I'm not overly sure though that many of our supporters would take to him given his past, and that may ultimately be the biggest stumbling block to the whole idea.

I guess that's tongue n cheek there eh

:D

There is definitely something missing when we come to sell players we never seem to get what the going market rate  is for that player in this period of time.

Someone said in there post a few pages back at least we will be doubling our money on Xabi but that's not the case cos obviously time has changed and there is different values for what a player is worth now so in the current market we are probably selling him for the price we bought him if you know what I mean.

Something need to be sorted out cos we were all blaming Parry (me included) for negotiations and obviously by what has happened so far maybe not

Some rumours this morning that Lee Catermole could be purchased with some of the funds the Alonso sale generates.

Ah Kazza you return, welcome back. "Obsession" is one of those subjects upon which I wouldn't even presume to know anywhere near so much as you.

No, I would say you'd be something of an authority on the concept of "obsession".

BTW, any thoughts on football  ???

I reckon if we are offered cash + player for Alonso, Huntelaar would be a tremendous acquisition for us.

I must confess Sean I've barely seen him play, but before he went to Madrid the World and his brother was talking him up. He wouldn't be the first player who didn't make it at one big club overseas only to hit bullseye with his next move (Thierry Henri and patrick Viera spring to mind for some strange reason).

If he's any good, and presumeably he must be better than N'Gog and Voronin (put together preferably), then it makes good sense to me. That's as long as he's priced sensibly. For starters we ain't interested in what they paid for him, totally irrelevent that is.

Alonso Transfer Request Confirmed - and Denied

Following today`s press reports that Xabi Alonso has handed in a written transfer request; we have been inundated with questions from fans asking if this is true...

In response, I can only say that this is a very complicated situation and I am hearing conflicting versions of events: the player`s entourage are denying that Xabi Alonso has handed in a transfer request; while on the other hand, Liverpool Football Club insists that a transfer request was submitted to the club last night, and it has been suggested that the paperwork was prepared at least a month in advance.

I am of the opinion that the decision to make this public knowledge represents an attempt to speed up the negotiations while simultaneously making it known that it is the player who wants to leave.

As has been widely reported, Rafa Benitez had effectively placed a 48 hour deadline on the deal and it is apparent that Liverpool want this matter resolved once and for all, today, so that they can plan for life with, or without, Alonso from tomorrow. However, Real Madrid – or should we say Florentino Perez – may stubbornly refuse to be seen to pressured into reacting to any ultimatum and, furthermore, the Spanish club are encountering difficulties in offloading players to raise funds and free up space in an overloaded squad.

On the other hand, it is possible that a fee could be agreed today and that Liverpool accept an immediate first instalment with subsequent payments made at a later date covering the total amount.

The ball has now been placed in Real Madrid`s court and it is impossible to second guess what their next move will be. It is evident that at least one party wants the matter resolved today, but whether or not they get their wish remains to be seen...

Anyway if Madrid can't come up with a figure today then Rafa should just tell Xabi he is staying
