Can't believe they have offered even less than their last offer. Rafa is going to have to get c.unty.

With regards to the smaller offer, Madrid must think they now hold the aces as Xabi has handed in a transfer request. At the end of the day nothing could be further from the truth, he still has a few years left on his contract and we don't have to sell if we don't want to. The cheek of them coming back with a smaller offer when you think about it. Lescott will probably end up going to City for 25 million pounds and Madrid are offering us 25 million euros for Xabi. In today's market that works out at 21.3 million pounds.

They can fu.ck right off

if the offer is lower, like its being reported, rafa just needs to sit xabi down and say

"look. look at how they're pi.ssing about. They've decreased their offer. That is not how you negotiate. I can not deal with them if they're gonna act like a.ssholes. I value you at £35M... but I am willing, because you want this move, to negotiate down to £30m. they value you at £25m, but then drop their bid down to £21m. They are fu.cking us both about, and I'm not having it. Unless they negotiate properly, you will still be a liverpool player next season"

thats what he needs to say to xabi

The deadline passed and nothing happened. This is why he probably handed in his transfer request to force the issue.

Agreed, mate,
Madrid are actin' the goat over this. Just hope the club has the nads to stand up to them, tell them to take a measly offer like that, and shove it as far up Mr Perez's cakehole as disrespectfully as possible !!

It seems to me we have a couple of options, but we need to decide what we are going to do fairly quickly.

Option 1. We feck Madrid off. This is not as bad as it sounds, tell em it's 28 million quid (lets keep it sensible) or feck off, and they have 24 hours to agree to it. Tell Alonso, that if they don't come up with the cash he can do whatever the feck he likes, but he ain't going. Yes we run the risk of him downing tools, yes the risk is there that his value will drop, but it is a World Cup year and he is under contract, so it would be entirely up to him. On the plus side we would send out a message to Madrid and maybe force their hand, on the downside we could potentially lose the opportunity to sign a replacement, and Xabi's form could return to what it was for the couple of seasons before the last one.

Option 2. We do a deal based on player exchanges. They need to trim their wage bill, and are far more likely in this market* to do us a good deal on swaps than they are in pure cash. Sneijder, that Negrado bloke plus 8 million or something would do for me.

* "The market" although bloated at the top end, is seeing very little activity in the mid range. Very few players are changing hands for between 5-10 million, and trimming wage bills for medium range players isn't easy.

Option 3. We get the deal done and get a replacement. If we are going to take this course, I absolutely believe we need to get on with it. Winning a big willy competition with Madrid is lovely, but we simply cannot afford a six week bedding in period for a new central midfielder. we have proved on numerous occasions that although it's true to say you can't win the title by the end of October, you can certainly lose any chance you had of winning it. We need to get on with things.

Option 4. We have alternative plans already contained within the squad, which takes the time factor off the critical list. This could possibly mean moving Gerrard back and playing Benayoun in behind Torres, playing Lucas/Spearing in Xabi's place (they'll probably insist on us only using one at a time though unfortunately), going 4-4-2 and playing N'Gog alongside Torres with Gerrard central mid etc. These options may seem unlikely, but it's worth considering how many goals Gerrard would score from central mid. 12? 15? 20? I don't think it'll happen, but it must have crossed the managers mind.

My preferred go as of now, would be to do the deal and get a replacement in. If we get screwed for a couple of mill, tell the club we're buying the replcement off that they are going to have to take a hit as well. That's what happens, you pass changes to market conditions onto the next one down the line. They can then tell Racing Club Maldives or whoever the feck they're replacing our replacement from, that it'll have to be a new kit only and they can forget about the training tops. It all works out in the end.

Yep spot on. He has 3 years left so there is no pressure on us to sell. Infact if I were Rafa I would even risk just keeping hold of him if it comes down to it. I just hope he has other money to get in someone else still.
