The manager will surely go for somebody who while sacrificing some of Xabi's tempo controlling qualities, offers a lot more going forward.

Yes, but despite Xabi being a deep lying playmaker, he's aswell the only holding midfielder capable of substituting Mascherano in that role with his different attributes.

That is, if we bring that so much demanded second striker or an attacking midfielder, who are we going to play when Mascherano goes to play to Bolivia? Plessis? Lucas? I guess we could put Gerrard there, as discussed in another thread, but that would imply to have Gerrard choped and changed in different positions. Plus, I don't think it's the role that suits Gerrard best.

I don't expect to have a Hollywoodesque player if Alonso leaves, but we defo need a Hammanesque replacement if he leaves.

You're probably right Sabes, but at some point surely we've got to make some kind of decision on Lucas. He's been at the club two seasons now, and we paid decent money for him given his age and experience. He's played quite a few games now, so it's time to ask is he good enough or not, and indeed what type of midfielder is he?

Is he the attacking midfielder they talked about when he first came (we haven't seen much evidence of it apart from the fact he's unusually good at attacking crosses in the air) or is he a defensive mid? Somethings got to give with the kid soon surely?

My read if pushed, and I say it without confidence, is that he's kind of a defensive midfielder and could cover for Masherano. In fairness if he can't cover for either Masherano or Gerrard, we might as well move him on as well.

I guess this is more for discussion in a lucas thread.. but i seem him as neither attacking or defensive - I see him as a box-to-box (whatever that means!) - but similar to someone like (the very popular at the moment) Scott Parker. He can tackle, shoot, cross, score etc, but without performing exceptionally well in any particular area.

a jack of all trades, master of none.

Can't believe he's put in a transfer request

I'd say £20 Mill plus Sneijder would be a good deal, and then we could get Silva

Really gutted about this. No one's as good as Xabi at controlling the game (certainly not anyone in our squad or someone we can afford anyway). He's just such a calming influence where other players are often a bit too drastic on the ball, especially when we (desperately) need a goal. Hopefully we squeeze as much as possible out of those cnuts, though I'm not holding my breath now he has apparently requested the move himself. Bad day and I only hope we sign someone with a bit of pedigree and skill (no, not Parker or Cattermole) who'll be able to unlock defences, as I agree with other posters on the fact, that we won't be able to get a direct replacement for Xabi.

Why do we need to replace Alonso, Gerrard can play in that position and we could buy a partner for Torres, what about Lavezzi, he looks good.

While reading Liverpools financial accounts over on RAWK I came accross this interesting post from ttnbd who does all the financial stuff :-

I'd say the first mistake is the torres transfer.  You've double counted the Garcia element in the totals.  So you need to add on garcia's transfer fee to the torres one.  From what has been said recently Torres was £20m net of the garcia element.

Gonzalez cost us approx £4m, Kromkamp goes on at the value of the exchange which was atleast £2m, as a result the outgoings go up too.  Aurellio actually cost £2m, contrary to reports as he had already agreed to sign for a south american club so we had to pay to get him.

For the year ending July 2005, you are including two players who were signed in the financial year ending July 2004.  The initial value of Alonso was £6.5m with upto £4m more depending on clauses.  These will have been activated in later accounting periods.

For the accounts all this goes through Gross, not net.

---------------------------------

So maybe we are making more from the deal than we were led to believe.

Just seen the news, is it correct that Xabi has put a transfer request in? I thought he wasn't going to force the issue? ??? Devastating if he goes IMO, was our best player last season after 2 fairly poor seasons with injury.:(

The problem with trying to replace Xabi with a similar player is there are very few of such mould left.. I can think of only Pirlo as a viable option for a like a like replacement.. But hes old..so outta question now .... No one else similar is coming into my mind now..
