Benítez wants sufficient time to buy a replacement and negotiations with Roma's 25-year-old midfielder Alberto Aquilani are ongoing. Real Madrid are in less of a hurry, however. The Spanish season does not begin until the last weekend of August.

Madrid's opening bid for Alonso, thought to be in the region of €27m (£24m) was rejected by Liverpool who have let it be known that they value the player at closer to €40m (£36m), even though they were willing to sell Alonso for around half that amount last summer.

Madrid's technical staff remain extremely keen to bring the midfielder in and pre-season friendlies have once again laid bare that there is a need for a ball-playing central midfielder.

I'm tired of hearing what a player was worth in the past.
This is now and lots of things change over time!

I don't want this to end just for the sake of ending it.
Unless we get 32-35 million Alonso stays unless he hands in a transfer request.
And until that happens I guess this saga will have to drag out.

Just saying to get it done isn't doing us any favours as Real won't meet our valuation which means the only way to get it done is if we lower ours. And I wish Rafa calls RM and tells them to get ******.

Everytime RM says :censored: in the media about how great Alonso is the price increases.
They sure are doing a great job of becoming one of my most hated club. Only Manure and the blue**** are worse but if this goes on like it has been for the past 10 years then sooner or later I'll explode.
They always, and I mean always try to screw us over.

Feck me the stuff that you can do if you've got a modicum of a clue, which needless to say I haven't  :(

It works as well, I just did it  :D

This morning they reckon he is going for less than 30 million

I just do not get it???

They want him

The price is 35 million

how can he go for less???

the only feasible reason is that Rafa does not deep down mind as he can perhaps get a replacement and perhaps one more player

Yes, I agree he is irreplaceable but the managers hands are tied  financially and just maybe with the sale of Arbeloa, Dossena & Alonso it gives us the funds to buy that big player.

gutted if he does go though

for anyone that gives alonso a hard time remember last year and also has he been crowing about how great madrid are (like that goofy tw@t Ronaldo).

Good luck Xabi if you do decide Madrid is where you will be.

The club is bigger than any individual. There will be someone else to step up next time. If he want's to go then fine, I don't want any player at this club whose heart is not 100% in it.

The fact that he hasn't come out moaning like Ronaldo shows he is not a complete :censored: but still he obviously wants to go so lets just let him. Im sure Rafa has a plan.

I agree   if he wants to go then he should go but why not this?

"Perez, you want him? 35 million by Friday or deals off for good!"

Bloody bunch of feckers they still owe us at least 12 million for stealing Owen ph and add another 2 million for that useless kunt Nunez!!

Another day another rumour.

Massively loose report in the Daily Mail saying that Rafa will now reluctantly sell Xabi in the next 24-48 hours.

We will see . . . . we will see !!
