JAVIER MASCHERANO FAMILY ANGUISH

http://www.newsoftheworld.co.uk/sport....ol.html
By CHRIS BASCOMBE, 13/06/2009
JAVIER MASCHERANO'S family anguish is behind his shock threat to quit Liverpool.

In the latest shattering transfer blow to manager Rafa Benitez, the Argentina skipper is considering leaving because his pregnant wife Fernanda has been unable to settle on Merseyside.

She returned to South America with the couple's daughter Lola before the end of last season. And although the 25-year-old midfielder is professionally happy at Anfield, the personal despair at being apart from his family means he feels he has no option but to consider moving on.

He thinks it will be easier for his wife to live in a Spanish-speaking country.

Benitez has insisted the midfielder is not for sale at any price, despite an imminent £30million bid from Barcelona. But the Liverpool boss has a fight on his hands to keep Mascherano given his difficult circumstances.

A Kop source said: "The truth is Javier loves Liverpool and is especially thankful to Rafa for everything he has done for his career in England. But he's facing a huge dilemma because he feels his family might be more settled in Spain. Nothing is certain, but it's true it's a big problem for the club."

With Xabi Alonso also determined to force through a move to La Liga, the spine of the Liverpool team could be ripped apart before the start of next season.

Benitez and Alonso remain on collision course, with the Spanish playmaker likely to try to force through a move after the Confederations Cup.

The only consolation for Benitez is that he could collect more than £50m in transfer fees for the two players - cash he could reinvest in the side.

On the other hand, replacing two world-class central midfielders will not be easy, especially as Liverpool have already missed out on their prime target Gareth Barry.

Benitez has still not given up hope of signing Valencia's David Silva. He has revived his interest in the 23-year-old Spaniard since Carlos Tevez declared his preference for Manchester City over Liverpool.

Ouch... i say we play hard ball for both and try to get as much as we can while their stocks are up... its only a matter of time before they both leave if both are unsettled at the club... Maybe Robben and Etoo + 15 million and the Spanisards can take both.. that would be good business for all parties involved i'd think... we can then use the money (added to whatever we have 20-30mill i think) to sign a top holding midfielder and strengthen our backline.... Gerrard back in the middle and imo we'd look a better side on paper than we do now...
Having said that, it would be very hard to cope with the loss of 2 key players (even harder given the positions they play), but we move on....

P.S... never in a million years will Alonso be worth 35mill or so, never in a million years will Mascherano be worth 30mill... its absolutely ridiculous. !

why shouldn't they? when ronaldo's 80, kaka's 56, and players like robbie keane, nani, anderson, carrick, hargreaves all 20ish. Why shouldn't they? today's market has changed dramatically. If we have to sell our players we have to be convinced ourselves otherwise we're gonna be low balled again and again...

Anyone who thinks that losing Alonso AND Mascherano won't f*ck up any hopes we have of landing the title is absolutely brain dead.

It appears that these people would be happy to have Gerrard and Lucas as our central midfielders, with Plessis as cover.

F*ck me, the World's gone mad. :no

who said that then?

The reality is though Lando that if they want to go then they want to go and we might as well get as much as possible for them, I reckon combined we should be looking to get damned close to £60 million for them, more than enough to get one great midfielder and one great striker as replacements, with that we should have what we need for the final push.

Someone pays £250m for a Picasso what do you think owners of (equally) valuable paintings will do.......................?

Wasn't the record before either Zidane or Figo for something like £43m? Most will be down to inflation, prices steadily rising, but you might hope fees would go up slightly more gradually ie £50m, then someone for £63m and then maybe £71m and then £80m, not from £43m to £80m in one near record-doubling step.

I bet his agent thought he'd found half a dozen winning lottery tickets

Most will be down to inflation??? where do you live lad, fecking Zimbabwe???  :D

No it is a ridiculous, obscene amount of money but why can't Liverpool figure out what Real Madrid's apparent genius marketing plan is and copy it. I still don't understand how Real MAdrid can be making the money they claim but if it is then we need to go learning. Why are they so much bigger than everybody else have they just been organised for so much longer or something? Anyway it's basically just sour grapes from me, I just hate their fecking arrogance, I bet they'd try to get nando as well if they didn't already know where he'd tell them to shove the contract.  :Oo:

I meant natural increases in pricing as time progresses, not the national inflation rate of a country since none of the figures involved in football bear any relation to normal "rules" (unless you earn £50k a week doing your job and someone buys you for £500k-£20m)

So if you like the inflation rate as per football. That is a player like Rush would cost £2.7m in the late 80s, in the mid 90s he'd have cost £10m-12m and nowadays he'd be in the region of £20m+

at last! someone with sense, totally agee lando mate. it really is worrying to read some of the so called opinion's on here at times.

so i say again the thought of losing alonso, & mash will have a major impact on our plight next season, these two were the major reason we played our best football in many a year, as it allowed the likes of SG etc freedom to exploit the oppo. to sell either would mean change of tactics & starting allover again.

again please someone post evidence where either player has said publicly they want to leave. (not rumoured,or bu11sh1t quotes, just pure facts.) otherwise it will just confirm this part of the season is fecking dangerous for team spirit,morale- & with all the other :censored: that is going on behind the scenes this is the last thing i want to hear about.

His salary will start at £9.5 million a year, rising 25 per cent annually to a staggering £29 million - or just over £557,500 a week - in the final year. He stands to earn up to £107 million.

Again I ask, where the bloody hell are Real Madrid financing this from? Just how big are they becuase this really doesn't make any frigging sense now. You can imagine that Kaka has probably got a similar deal. To bankroll this they wouldhave to be earnign an enormous amount in merchandising, far far more than most other top clubs combined.
I mean who the feck has ever seen anyone in a Real Madrid shirt becuase I can't remember the last time I did. Plenty of Barca shirts, Manure, Liverpool, Arsenal, AC Milan etc but not Real Madrid. Are they just completely phony like Chelsea or is there some huge hidden market somewhere, does everyone in China and India support Real Madrid maybe?

Perez power and huge income fund Real's £250m spending spree
TV and kit deals coupled with President's pull at the banks explain cash mountain

By Nick Harris
Friday, 12 June 2009

Kaka can expect to be the world's most expensive player for a few days only

Real Madrid's summer spending could reach €300m (£256m) according to the latest estimates in Spain, but how do they have so much cash? There are two reasons: huge income, and a powerful president.

Real earn more money than any club in the world. When figures from the 2008-09 season are released late this year, they will show annual income of €400m, possibly more.

A domestic TV deal worth £132m per year with broadcaster Mediapro underpins this, although Real also have massive commercial streams, sponsorship deals and matchday revenues.

Wearing adidas kit earns £81m a year in fees and spin-offs, and the online betting firm BWIN pays £18m a year (at today's exchange rate) to be Real's shirt sponsors.

Audi and Coca-Cola are among Real's other commercial partners, while corporate income on match days has increased by reconfiguring the Bernabeu (capacity 80,500) to hold more "hospitality customers".

Almost as important as the revenues, if not more so, is that Real's president is Florentino Perez, 62, one of Spain's richest self-made men. He was the president from 2000 to 2006 during the first "galactico" era at the club and has now returned to oversee the sequel.

Forbes magazine estimates Perez has a personal fortune of £1.1bn, not that he has ever needed to dip into his own pockets to pay for players. Nor does he plan to, and under Real's constitution, nor is he allowed to. Equally he is forbidden from profiting from the club.

But Perez's standing as one of Spain's wealthiest and most influential businessmen will loosen the purse strings at the local banks. No bank will want to be the one denying a line of credit. Real will have no problem borrowing money, even if their summer spree reaches £250m or more.

With Kaka already signed from Milan for £56m and Cristiano's proposed move from Manchester United worth £80m, Real are already more than half way to spending £250m. If David Villa is lured from Valencia, for around £30m-£35m, they could have spent £170m or more on three players with other targets still out there.

How do the numbers stack up? Those close to the club say that €100m was always going to be the minimum in the transfer kitty for the summer, mainly from annual profits. On top of that, Real want to sell this summer, with Dutch faces prominent on the "out" list. Arjen Robben, 25, Wesley Sneijder, 25, Rafael van der Vaart, 26, Ruud Van Nistelrooy, 32, and even the prolific Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, 25, could all go. It might not be straightforward to arrange deals at top prices, but even offloading at discounts should bring in €100m. Van Nistelrooy aside, the others have their prime years ahead.

So let us say that the kitty plus sales give Real £170m, or thereabouts, towards spending of £250m-plus. With Real's income, the balance of £80m or so required in bank loans is a relative pittance, especially when Perez is convinced – and he has historical evidence to support him – that any star signings will effectively pay for themselves.

That was his mantra in the first galactico era, and it is worth recalling how David Beckham's signing in 2003 demonstrated it. John Carlin, author and Real Madrid aficionado, knows Perez well and recounted the story of the day the Beckham deal was done in his book White Angels: Beckham, Real Madrid and the new football.

"Peanuts! They're asking peanuts," is what Real's director of marketing, Jose Angel Sanchez, said down the phone to Perez from Sardinia, where he was negotiating for Beckham with United's then chief executive, Peter Kenyon, for a maximum £22m. Perez, ever the tough businessman, wanted to knock them down more, but Sanchez assured Perez that Beckham was worth €500m in commercial income.

Beckham certainly helped transform Real's finances. Their annual income the year before he arrived was around £180m. Last season it was more than double that. They may have struggled on the pitch but Perez, who is a civil engineer by trade and who Carlin calls "the cleverest bloke in football", has helped them thrive financially.

In business, Perez bought a construction firm for one peseta in 1983 and turned it into a major international conglomerate, ACS. As Carlin wrote in White Angels: "He is hard, dry, austere, persistent, driven. You look at him and you understand a little better how a handful of his compatriots once sailed off in small wooden boats and conquered Mexico and Peru."

It is facinating to see how Real make so much money available. If we ever want think about being able to afford such expensive players we really need to sort ourselves out. Starting with a new stadium otherwise we will be scrapping with teams like Real for our best players year after year.
