Someone pays £250m for a Picasso what do you think owners of (equally) valuable paintings will do.......................?

Wasn't the record before either Zidane or Figo for something like £43m? Most will be down to inflation, prices steadily rising, but you might hope fees would go up slightly more gradually ie £50m, then someone for £63m and then maybe £71m and then £80m, not from £43m to £80m in one near record-doubling step.

I bet his agent thought he'd found half a dozen winning lottery tickets
Don't panic Mr Mainwaring! My Owzat account is locked by a seeming flaw in the board system. I changed my e-mail address, but that left me needing to be re-activated and therefore powerless to even post or notify a mod.

Kop boss Rafa Benitez is reluctant to sell Spanish midfield star Alonso and has already turned down an £18million bid.

Robben plus 16Mil would be a good deal.

I think we can get 30Mil from them but we need to play hardball.

Most will be down to inflation??? where do you live lad, fecking Zimbabwe???  :D

No it is a ridiculous, obscene amount of money but why can't Liverpool figure out what Real Madrid's apparent genius marketing plan is and copy it. I still don't understand how Real MAdrid can be making the money they claim but if it is then we need to go learning. Why are they so much bigger than everybody else have they just been organised for so much longer or something? Anyway it's basically just sour grapes from me, I just hate their fecking arrogance, I bet they'd try to get nando as well if they didn't already know where he'd tell them to shove the contract.  :Oo:

It must be down to all those sponsors and image rights mate. Plus you know having won the European Cup 9 times probably helped in they way of recognition too. We definatley didn't cash in our European sucess as we should have not even in 2005 sad to say.

They put a fiver on Everton to reach the FA Cup final.

nice one

Their deal with Adidas brings in tons, especially the 4 years they had Beckam.  Read somewhere he brought in somewhere between 200-600 million for the club, with advertisements and such.  Now that they have Ronaldo, he might also bring in some cash.

Although I don't believe Ronaldo will be as marketable as Becks.

So are Real Madrid really that much bigger than Manure and us then?? If so where is their market?

Spain and basically everywhere around the world.  Liverpool is :censored: at global marketing, and it's no surprise were not bringing in money there.

That was down to bad handling by Parry...he didn't capitalise on our success, and his inactivity of branding our name around the world was another missed opportunity...thank god he has fukked off.  :nod

Only that Benitez wants Negredo. The real news will come when the signing of Villa is confirmed, then the next target is Xabi. For the moment is soon to Know something.

Surely Spain is not that much bigger a market than the UK though is it?
Anyway if they are this global brand than fair enough but I strongly suspect that the whole thing is just b0ll0cks and they are being bankrolled by the banks which own them. Why would Beckham at Manure be worth so much less than Beckham at real Madrid. Manure have been on the ball with advertising  and marketing for at least the last twenty years, can't really understand that they can be so far behind Real MAdrid but if they are they are.

In any case it is grossly unfair that a handfull of rich teams can buy the leagues, we have to have a system inEurope which is more similar to the US system ,i.e having draft picks, salsry caps etc. It really is getting bloody silly now, I mean £80 million for one player! The whole of Newcastle FC is being sold for £100 million ffs and we are supposed to believe one diving cheating little asswipe like Ronaldo is worth almost as much as an entire historic club with a fantaical fanbase.
