If Rafa had come out as strong in defence of Alonso as he has for Masch ...... things might not have got to this stage in the first place.

Probably becasue Rafa does plan to sell him Saint. He very nearly did to Arsenal last year for only a few mil more.

The philosophy of Madrid is different. They say that the big players are the cheapest cause they can recover the money and increase it for the club  with the image rights, marketing, publicity, etc.

Madrid always says the Beckham´s investment yielded them four times more than his cost. And the same about Zidane.
I don´t know a sh.it about marketing but that´s their theory.

Yeah I think they made back the 25Milthey paid for him (Beckham) on shirt sales in Asia alone in a few weeks. Just goes to show they are also very good at marketing and merchandising.

Same story different site.

Rafa eyes wonderkids as Xabi part-exchange

Reports in Spain today suggest Rafael Benitez could be willing to sell Spanish international Xabi Alonso if Real Madrid include two of their brightest young talents plus a substantial cash payment.

Spanish newspaper AS claims that Benitez wants the Spanish giants to include Alvaro Negredo and Alberto Bueno in addition to £30 million to part with the midfielder.

Negredo, 23, scored 19 league goals for UD Almeria last season following a move from the Bernabeu in 2007. Under his current deal Real Madrid own 50% of any potential deal for the player and also have a buy back option, which they would exercise if a deal can be agreed with Liverpool.

The tall frontman (pictured, at left) recently told Sky Sports: “My future depends on Real Madrid, but I believe that this summer but it is logical that I am interested in playing in the Premier League and especially Liverpool.”

Bueno, 21, is seen by Benitez as a star of the future after he top-scored in the 2006 Under 19 European Championship and scored 37 goals in 37 games for Real Madrid Castilla. Equally adept as a winger or as a second striker, the young man (pictured, at right) could play a key role in taking Alonso to Real Madrid.

--------

I guess Rafa would never openly say who he is interested in unless of course he was just speaking with Madrid directly.

This weeks Guilleme Ballague should be interesting.

SO far the players Rafa wants for XAbi are

Van Der Vaart
Robben

Negredo
Drenthe
Bueno

So which one is it journos - make your minds or stop posting constant bullsh.it specualtion.

Flippin hell let us have some fun  :nod

Maybe we aren't linked with these players and there are no quotes, what the feck else is there for a football supporter to shout about untill the season starts?.

I wouldn't care if we were linked to every tom dick and bob
but nobody seems happy to linked with anybody if it's
not quoted in black and white as coming straight from Rafa's
mouth.

Come on lads lighten up just a bit  :D

So why are we making the same with Nando and Gerrard?

LFC made a tidy little 10 million....... mainly due to increased sales in pin badges apparantly.

I think you touched on it a few days ago in another thread. We never pursue marketing that heavily. I don't think we cashed in on our past sucess enough either.

It takes time but also we have to have a title winning side as well.

GYBS - Beckham was already a worldwide sensation before he moved to Real. He was coming from a very sucessfull Utd side and was his countries captain and best player.

Very true. I don't know how heavy we market ourselves in Asia but im sure it can be better. Hopefully that will change soon. I think Hicks mentioned that as some of the things he wanted to address before Parry left, not Asia specifically but marketing and sponsors generally.

bavlondon wrote:Xabi Alonso to be begged by Rafa Benitez to remain at Anfield

Rafa Benitez's failure to land Gareth Barry could scupper his entire summer spending plans.

And Liverpool's Spanish coach could be forced to beg Xabi Alonso to stay despite trying to sell him two years in a row.

Benitez, who called for the head of outgoing chief executive Rick Parry for acting too slowly in deals, was caught cold over the sale of Barry to Manchester City - and that has left him in a desperately awkward situation.

The Reds boss thought he had an agreement that would allow him to snatch the England midfielder at a cut-price because he was in the final year of his contract.

He then planned to sell Alonso for a huge fee, allowing him to generate up to £15million in profit, while finding a ready-made replacement for the Spanish midfielder.

Alonso is upset at being touted around for a second summer in succession, and has decided he will leave Anfield after the latest humiliation.

And Benitez is left with the difficult task of having to persuade a player to stay who he has repeatedly tried to sell.

His dilemma is simple. Barry was a natural replacement for Alonso and had Real Madrid come up with the £23m asking price the deal would have left Benitez with significant profit to spend.

But without Barry, there is no obvious substitute for Alonso, and even if there were, to sign a topclass international midfielder to go straight into the Liverpool team would cost more than the £23m the Spaniard was hoping to fetch.

Add to that the continuing pursuit of Javier Mascherano by Barcelona, and the Liverpool boss may find himself trying to fight off transfer bids, rather than making them.

A story full of complete BS.

unsubstantiated bull :censored:... rafa and xabi could probably sue them for libel...

The only way that can happen is if we bring in more quality and win trophies. This summer is massive for us.
