I think Rafa would sell to a rival team but if he did the price would have to be silly like maybe 30Mil. Even still it would be a bad idea imo but we need the money so it's not like we can't dismiss it.

If we offloaded Babel for 8-9M, that's the bulk of the cost of this guy. Almost net zero outlay....Still leaving funds for another couple of decent signings, methinks....Or if we flogged off the Voronator, Degen and a few other donkeys, we're still netting a profit...

I doubt we would get anything at all for Degen.

Benitez begins plans for life after Xabi

Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez is ready to listen to offers for Xabi Alonso, with Chelsea, Arsenal, Manchester City among those said to be interested, as the former Valencia coach has lined up Athletic Bilbao’s Javi Martinez as his replacement.

According to reports in the Mirror, the 20 year old Basque playmaker is being lined up for a £10 million bid after a string of stirring displays in La Liga.

The defensive midfielder has been compared to Patrick Viera or Steven Gerrard and has been monitored by Liverpool since 2007. At 6ft 3in the player would fit seamlessly into the physical nature of English football.

Benitez has recently dismissed reports he is set to off-load Xabi Alonso, but privately he is well aware of the need to raise funds to bring in new recruits. Should the Merseyside club receive an offer of £20 million for the Spaniard, the club will sell, and heading the queue is Real Madrid.

Alonso nearly joined Juventus last summer, but the Italian giants baulked at the £17 million asking price.

again, not a single quote. just a journalist making an easy story but putting together the rumour that we're after martinez with all the thousands about xabi. its easy - "oh, they might buy this midfielder, which means they're going to sell alonso."

i have to admit that the ongoing saga is a cause for concern but i'm still pretty much sure that benitez will do the right thing for the team and not sell alonso.

"I'm deliberately not commenting.

I'd be on a hiding to nothing, as what people say in public and what is happening in private are often completely different. I could post what I've heard, and then Rafa or Xabi could make some statement that contradicts it (not because they're telling the truth, but because it's all part of the games that are being played).

Who are people going to believe? I'm not prepared to spend the whole summer in arguments on here and being ripped to shreds on other forums. I believe Xabi has played his last game for us, I'd dearly love to be proved wrong but we'll see."
