IF this was true that must surely signal the end of Alonso at Liverpool. The other thing I was reading was that Gillett and Hicks have disappeared and can't be contacted to approve the purchase of Barry  (It was only in the Star but.......)

I read yesterday, mate, that Barry's already missed the registration deadline for the CL qualifiers.  So, it will be very, very interesting to see whether Alonso plays next week.  Obviously he's needed from a  footballing perspective so there's only one conclusion to draw if he doesn't play.

We have until tomorrow (7th) 24.00 CET to register players for the third round qualifier.

Thats what I read too. As far as I am aware (not really sure) if a player plays in a qualifier, he can't play in the knockout stages for someone else. For the later rounds 3 players can be registered, but only one who has played in an earlier round for a different team.

Anyone know the actual rulings?

We have to submit a full list of players to UEFA for the qualifier by tomorrow midnight CET, however, we are permitted to make one change to that list which has to be re-submitted at no later than 24.00 CET on the day preceding the first leg (so, midnight on the 12th). Therefore, Barry could conceivably replace a player already on the list up until the day before the first leg.

On subsequent qualification:
For all matches from the start of the first knockout round, a club may register
a maximum of three new eligible players for the remaining matches in the
current competition. Such registration must be completed by
1 February 2009 at the latest. This deadline cannot be extended.

One player from the above quota of three who has played UEFA club
competition matches for another competing club in the current season may
exceptionally be registered, provided that the player has not been fielded:
1) in the same competition for another club
2) for another club that is currently in the same competition.

Furthermore, if the player’s new club is playing in the UEFA Cup, his former
club must not have played in the UEFA Cup at any point in the current
season.

So, only one player who has played in UEFA competition with another club is eligible to play for another team after the group stages, as long as they have gone from playing in the UEFA cup to the Champions League, and Vice Versa.

Cheers for the clarification about registration deadlines.  I think I read it in the Daily Post's match report last night and just assumed we'd left it too late with Barry.

As for playing for another team in the CL if you've already played a qualifier, surely it can't happen and hence that's why Rafa "rested" Owen against Graz (if memory serves) 4 years ago.

Correct, but you can play for another club in another competition i.e. UEFA cup to Champions League and vice versa. F.uck's sake read the rules  :D

So basically Barry could play for Villa in the UEFA cup and still play in the CL for us, but if Alonso plays in the CL for us, he couldn't then play for Arsenal in the CL?

If Barry played for Villa in UEFA cup.....then signed for us....In the UCL knockout stages Barry would be eligible to play for us, but not in the group stages, according to the rules anyway. Alonso wouldn't be able to play for Arsenal in the UCL if he'd played for us in the same competition, but he would be able to play in the UEFA cup if they finished third in the UCL group stage.

With Gerrard looking like he'll be injured then Xabi will simply have to play.

My hope is we sign Barry this week and Alonso plays next week for a recovering/rested Gerrard. Then we can all settle for the summer with a class midfield line up!!

Keep Alonso. If we want another player then sell Pennant, Kuyt if need be to raise funds. If we can't raise enough to buy someone worth buying then simply keep Alonso.
Never buy from PC World, product quality is poor and their 'customer service' is even poorer

Alonso will only be sold for the right price - £18m I believe - consider Tottenham have been told to cough-up £15m for .. wait for it  DEAN ASHTON - is that a joke or what.. be lucky to get tuppence for that bleached excuse of a footballer - so bo way will we sell Alosno for less that 18mill .

Having said that want him to stay - hope he does.
