Personally I can not understand why some people say Barry gives us more than Alonso. Barry has never played for a top team, never really played in europe and never been part of a World Cup or European Cup.

So what he will ACTUALLY offer is uncertain.

Are you really that stupid to presume a good player can only ccome from a "top team" play at a WC or in Europe.  FFS !

Remind me where we got Ian Rush from again.

Absolutely clueless.

Just a lil tip, Jay Jay!  :D

If it's true Barry is better and you know your football and you want to debate, you'll sound far more convincing for your cause if you explain why Barry is better in terms of football rather than calling idiots, poof or biased to the posters who think otherwise.

Surely if he's better than Alonso you can tell us why, further than saying he's Gerrard's best mate and saying we're biased?

Anyhow, as someone has stated the comparisons are not the most important thing right now. Just talk what you know about Barry's abilities if you feel you know the player better than mosts posters here -- that is, be informative.

Alonso to decide club future after Euros - Soccernet

Updated: June 10, 2008, 1:00 PM UK

Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso claims he will not think about his future until after Euro 2008.
Alonso has been strongly linked with a summer move to Juventus, but insists he is currently focusing on Spain's European challenge.

'I know there is interest (from Juventus),' he told El Mundo Deportivo. 'But right now I not going to talk about that because there is enough to think about here with the national team.'

Alonso is one of several English-based players called up by Spain for Euro 2008 and insists recent press accusations that they cannot adapt to their national side's style of play are well wide of the mark.

'It's not the first time we have played with the national team, so we must have done something good at some point,' he said. 'When one of us who plays in England has a good game, people won't say anything. Those of us playing in England are just as prepared as those playing in Spain.'

Alonso admits Liverpool's direct style is totally different to Spain's passing game, but he feels comfortable in both systems.

'Without a doubt, with Liverpool we use a more direct game and in very few passes try to find the opposition goal, but I don't feel uncomfortable in a passing side,' he said.

***************

If the soundbites coming from the press are true, then Xabi is gone by all accounts. If this is the case, then I'd rather this be resolved sooner than later...... If the funds to be gained from his sale is to be used to strengthen the squad, be it Barry, Villa, Silva, Pele or Maradona, it's better for us to initiate the transfers early and give the new players more time to bed in with the current squad. Should make the transition easier for next season.

Radio Shitty have just reported that the deal may be off as Juventus are refusing to meet the £16 million asking price.
If that is the case it will be interesting to see whether Rafa continues to push Xabi towards the exit door to make way for Barry ???.

ALONSO IN, BARRY OUT
Posted 11/06/08 15:43EmailPrintSave

Juventus are reported to have made a renewed bid of £14.2m for Xabi Alonso, which will spark a new offer for Gareth Barry.

Stadio News 24 are reporting that the Old Lady have increased their bid to edge closer to Liverpool's own valuation of £15m.

That money will be used to buy Barry from Aston Villa, who have confirmed that the midfielder wants to leave the club.

Liverpool are expected to make an official move as soon as Alonso has completed his transfer to Italy.

In a statement Villa said: "Gareth Barry has stated in discussions with our manager he would like to leave Aston Villa to join Liverpool.

"But Liverpool's bid for the player has been rejected and they have been informed of Villa's continued position in this matter."

Alonso out and Barry in?  Sorry...but i'm not convinced that is a great move.

I'm tired of waiting on Alonso to make the step up to be the truely great player he was on the verge of becoming, lets just face the facts he just lost something, I don't think he has the heart for it.

And Barry has become that player? I don't think so.

I thought we were selling for 16 Million. Xabi would be a hit in Italy. Xabi is more of a technical player, and he would do more with Juventus then he would with us. I know he's not the kind of player we can find anywhere, but you've got to understand the rest of the league knows he's all about the passing game so he's not good for that anymore.

My new job in the mornings is at the traffic department here.

I've met Xabi's father today, who happens to be a close friend of Andres, the security guard. I was smoking a fag with the guard and Periko has popped up.

After some courtesy and saying I'm a Liverpol fan, I asked him

<Sabre> WTF is going on with Rafa? doesn't he appreciate Xabi any more?
<Periko> Not that he doesn't, but there are more important players in the squad

<Sabre> Yeh of course, but Alonso swap for Barry? what's that?

Periko frowns his face as in stranged, as in he didn't relate my initial question to the possibility of Xabi going off

<Periko> Ah, there's nothing of that for sure, don't take too seriously the press,
<Sabre> So, he's staying then?
<Periko> You never know what happens, but so far there's nothing.
<Sabre> Is Xabi ok?
<Periko> Yeh, he's very calm.

As far as Andres has told me (he'll be my Uncle Albert, Tio Andres), he'll tell me before any newspaper when some move really happens, let's see if it's true.
