Fireplaces - What kind of wood do you burn

I haven't used my fireplace for a little over a year, but I'm getting back into using it about 4 times per week.

I've found that Maple is probably the best for a clean burn which leaves little ash.  I'm about out of Maple though and now I'm burning various hardwoods.  Right now I'm burning some Beech.  It cracks alot and scares the hell out of the missus, but once it's done cracking it burns really hot and offers alot in the heat department.

Just curious as to what types of wood you folks use in the various parts of the world.  Seeing as this forum is a bit of the "global" variety I thought it would be interesting to find out how people from around the world use their fireplaces.

Is it just something you use as a decoration, do you decorate your mantle ?  etc.

I won't celebrate Rafa going........ but I will be over the moon if Dalglish comes in. League within 2 years if he gets the job, AND YOU CAN QUOTE ME ON THAT.

Really? Not that I doubt you but.  Wow.  Isn't it part of human nature to just burn things for fun?  Wood, cardboard,  Rafa's contract, Newspaper, I don't just do it for entertainment though.  I'll turn the heat off and burn a good fire and basically save a night or two's worth on my energy bill.

May have smelled nice Igor, but it was a bugger lighting a coal fire every morning and clearing out the ashes. I will stick with the central heating and getting up to a warm house. I used to love toast made in the fire though, much better than from any toaster.

Not noticed many where I am lately, but maybe close by. I think that's actually a declining "past time" for the local scumbag.
