Fine, would we percieve it as ethical in the modern era?

I don't think they were born instant @rsholes, but I do know that the society they live in could make them @rsholes.

I'm not sure what you're getting at mate?

If it's to argue that prior to the arrival of recognised religions humans were immoral - because they killed one another - and that therefore religion has had a positive effect, it simpy doesn't hold since peoples/civilisations subsequent to the arrival of recognised religions have also sanctioned the killing of people.

If that is your view and if you're of a particular religious persuasion then it does though pose a big problem I think.

I'm a traditionalist. Sometimes I sacrifice children to the sungod to guarantee a good harvest just like the religions of many years ago.

My religion must not be questioned or you are a bigot.

I agree with this.

I get annoyed when christians say looking out for somebody in need is a christian virtue, it is a human one.

I remember a flatmate that was ultra maniac christian and he said if there was no heaven or hell then why would you be good to people.

Nutter!

I don't trust people that are "in your face" religious,  I feel they are covering up something.

I never made the claim that ridding the world of religion would rid of the world of harm.  I say that ridding the world of religion would rid of the world of harm caused by religion. Seems to make sense to me.

Yes it does.

The problem is that religions is the answer for some of the needs of human intellect.

When in Spain you have removed the utter catholicism of past centuries, what brought that? culture? Science? Peace? Freedom?

No, it brought love for money, love for greed, other religions, other idols.

The world doesn't work like that, it's not as simple as removing a problem, and expect it to be solved. Sometimes when you fix a hole, 5 new appear.
