who is holding the record now btw? Rush?
Torres now has 43 top flight goals from 63 games (55 starts and 8 as sub).UPDATE AFTER HULL - Now 46 from 64 games
At the rate he's popping them in, he could reach 50 quicker than any other Liverpool player.
Games to reach 50 top flight goals
78 - Roger Hunt (finished with 168 top flight goals) [plus 77 in Second Division]
80 - Sam Raybould (100) [19]
80 - Albert Stubbins (75)
81 - Jack Parkinson (103) [21]
83 - John Aldridge (50)
84 - Ian Rush (229)
88 - Robbie Fowler (128)
90 - Gordon Hodgson (233)
95 - Joe Hewitt (68) [1]
98 - Harry Chambers (135)
98 - Kenny Dalglish (118)
98 - Michael Owen (118)
111 - John Barnes (84)
116 - John Toshack (74)
121 - David Johnson (55)
124 - Ian St.John (77) [18]
125 - Dick Forshaw (117)
125 - Tom Miller (50)
141 - Jack Balmer (99)
158 - Berry Nieuwenhuys (74)
162 - Adolf Hanson (50)
167 - Billy Liddell (96) [119]
175 - Kevin Keegan (68)
203 - Jack Cox (62) [10]
221 - Terry McDermott (54)
269 - Ray Kennedy (51)
270 - Arthur Goddard (65) [7]
281 - Steven Gerrard (73 not out)
302 - Steve Heighway (50)
So 29 LFC players have done it already. And if Torres scores 7 in his next 14 games, he will take Roger Hunt's record.
Hunt reached 50 at the rate of 1.56 games per goal. Torres's current rate is slightly better at 1.47. If he keeps up that rate, he would take the record in his 74th game.
I dont have access to the records for all clubs throughout the league's 120 year history. However, in the last 17 years, the PL era, 12 players have reached 50 top flight goals in less than 100 games.
65 - Andy Cole
66 - Alan Shearer
68 - Ruud van Nistelrooy
83 - Kevin Phillips
83 - Thierry Henry
87 - Ian Wright
88 - Robbie Fowler
94 - Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink
94 - Teddy Sheringham
96 - Les Ferdinand
97 - Matthew Le Tissier
98 - Michael Owen
So Torres would need to score 7 goals in his next game to take the PL record, or 7 in his next two to equal it.
More realistically, he has 19 games to become the 4th quickest of the Sky era. Faster than the likes of Henry, Wright and Ferdinand, as well as Fowler & Owen.
BTW, 65 players have reached 50 PL goals. They include
106 - Dropba
108 - Adebayor
129 - Robbie Keane
141 - Anelka
146 - Rooney
147 - Ronaldo
174 - Defoe
284 - Lampard
So Torres is putting them away at a better rate than a good many well-renowned scorers.
