What a way to make a first impression.  :no

First make a claim with nothing to back it up then trying to correct peoples grammar and misspelling the word.  :wwww

Effes wrote:Benitez also conceded that Mascherano, more critical than ever in the early months with Alonso gone to Real Madrid and new signing Alberto Aquilani nursing an ankle injury, was unhappy to have found himself back at Anfield. "He was a bit disappointed as it was a fantastic opportunity with a big club. But he is happy here, and as a player and a person you can trust him 100 per cent," Benitez said.

The Liverpool manager blames the daily telephone calls from Mascherano's compatriot Lionel Messi, imploring him to come to Barcelona, for the player's yearning to leave

I must say that I really dislike him now, especially after all the :censored: that he'd said about loving this club and repaying Rafa with trophies.  Hope that we get rid of him next yr.  I just can't believe that I actually wanted this traitor to be a Liverpool captain someday.   :(

Javier Mascherano will be handed a triple-your-money contract as Liverpool look to keep the Argentina captain out of the clutches of Barcelona.

Anfield boss Rafa Benitez has revealed that he wants talks about a new £90,000-a-week deal to begin immediately after having a number of private meetings with Mascherano.

The 25-year-old wanted the opportunity to speak to the Spanish and European champions after Barca coach Pep Guardiola earmarked him to be his new midfield enforcer.

But Benitez told Mascherano that he would not sell him to the Catalans because he could not compromise Liverpool’s team further after allowing Xabi Alonso to move to Real Madrid.

Mascherano’s current contract – which still has almost three years to run – is worth about £30,000 a week.

That puts him towards the lower end of Anfield’s pay structure and has become a source of contention for the Argentine after Benitez warned Barcelona that it would cost them a minimum of £50m to land their man.

Mascherano wants a pay deal to reflect his value in the transfer market – and Benitez has told Liverpool’s owners that they must now bring him much closer to £120,000-a-week top earners like Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres.

Benitez said: “I think now is the time to speak to Javier about a new contract. He still has a lot of time on the contract he signed, but I told him that once he came home from the national team then we would talk again.

“Mascherano became unsettled and I had to sit him down to explain that we didn’t want to sell him.

“I can understand why he wanted to listen to Barcelona because they are a top side, a club who won three titles last year. It was not an easy time for him.

“But he knew from the first day that we would not sell him. He is an important player for us.

“I showed him from the beginning how important, signing him from West Ham on loan and then buying him even after he went to the Olympics.”

Benitez added: “We knew that Alonso would probably leave back in April and when his agent came to see us on May 15 we knew it was a certainty.

“Xabi wanted to leave and although we wanted to keep him, once he asked for a move it was clear the only thing we could do was get the best price for him.

“With Javier it has been different. Barcelona’s interest has been through rumours, making him unsettled.

“That made it easier to communicate with him and I think he needed to hear that we just wouldn’t sell.”

I must admit £30K a week is pittance for a top player at a big 4 club.

Mascherano on £30k a week! That's only £15k take home. If he pays NI too he might have to take a second job. He's on more than that surely.

Just reading back it says his contract is worth £30K a week - Im thinking they've
already deducted the tax on that. That seems to make more sense.

Wasn't he on 30k because he got a few millions when we bought him and therefore it was agreed that his salary would be lower for some time?

I'm not 100% sure either, but I thought I read it somewhere just after we bought him.
