I think the reason Baros and Alonso were on the bench was to rest them for Monaco.

I haven't seen the match as there will only be a delayed telecast later tonight. I only read that Rafa played a 4-5-1 formation with Cisse alone upfront and Finnan playing in midfield while Alonso was a sub. Alonso replaced Gerrard later in the second half to protect Gerrard's niggling groin. Also noteworthy was the fact that Finnan scored and Garcia score his first goal.

Good result.

benitez used to use this formation with valencia but in prem against the tougher teams dont think it would be a good idea but we shall see :)

If I am not mistaken, we also started as a 4-5-1 against Bolton with Baros alone upfront but then, Liverpool's passing, especially in the middle of the park, was not up to the task and the debutantes found the hard working and energetic Bolton midfield a handful.

Any formation we play will rely a lot on the players' passing and movements if we are to emulate Bentihez's playing philosophy at Valencia. Benithez has said that the approach of playing the best players (on paper) available does not always work and he needs to adapt his first 11 to the requirements of the game on the day of the match. Perhaps this explains why Finnan was on the starting line-up and Warnock was not.

i have only read the first page of this thread, i'll read the rest later but this shows why none of you lot are football managers. :D

you all slated the boss' team without giving it a chance and look what happened.

Garcia was excellent in the first half, Alonso got his minutes to adapt (looks like he will take time). Hamann was excellent, Kewell was hot and cold AGAIN, Hyypia and Carragher played well and Finnan had an excellent game.

Also playing 1 upfront is the way to go. All this ****** about needing two strikers ****** me off. :)

If we beat monaco an manc and hopefully arsenal or at least get a draw to them we need to keep the memento and believe in ourselves cause I know my liverpool on its day can beat anyone, if they start playing with confidence and start to frighten teams again this is a big booster for us we are the best we can win everything must be there mentality cause we are in my eyes but im biast if we get a good run together in CL I really think we could win it. Ill get grief for sayin that but I trully believe we can u never know we could be the sly dark horses :;):
mmmm isnt garcia gettin abit carried away when we scored :D
