If this is the case I don't see us going out and buying a direct replacement for Alonso. I can ee him dropping Gerrard back ito the middle and Silva coming in and playing just of Torres.
Also who's to say Rafa will have all of the 30 million to spend,I know of 2 Americans would might like to see it coming their way instead

and they didn't come around till Spaletti showed up, and he hasn't been the only one at Roma that has been injured all the time the last couple years either.

I imagine our scouting department has access to a lot more information and footage of Aquilani than we do. I bet the club doctor is better qualified to complete a long-term injury risk assessment than we are too.
People have assumed he was injured for all the games he didn't play - But what if he wasn't picked regularly at 18-22 because established players got selected ahead of him? What if one or two of the 6manager's he's played under didn't like his close-set eyes? There are all manner of things scouting departments can access that we can't. A manager like Benitez won't just have contacts in Spain; he'll be in touch with scouts and football men all over Europe - people whose judgement he trusts.
There are plenty in here who wanted us to sign Darren Bent because he was cheaper, had premier league experience and was the most prolific striker available - Whilst Torres was just a 10goal a season man who went down to easily in a lot of fans opinion - I didn't go that far but I was a bit wary of Torres purchase. I knew he was a good player but I saw him as a 2nd striker who didn't score the amount of goals we were looking for myself.
How many of us were upset to see Danny Murphy get shipped out and be replaced by some upstart with a bit of a rep, but no other big clubs interested in him? Who would have guessed Morientes would struggle so badly?
None of us can judge these acquisitions confidently, we can only trust... And if you don't trust the manager, it's just tough sh*t really because it is his choice to make and won't ever be ours

2 things come to mind after reading this piece...
1) yes he was left on the bench even when fit sometimes...but then again you'd have to look at the players Roma have/had...
2) same scouts who found Dossena ?

Cole was always a central midfielder until Mourinho converted him, he could slot in in front of Mash and in and around Stevie. He'd score goals, make goals and get you untold free kicks around the box (not by diving necessarily, because he's tricky and can dribble). Top player, acclimatised, something to prove and the right age.
14-17 million, Joe Cole, come on down.
