My brothers managed to quit smoking. Over a year and half now. And he said what has helped him the most is keeping busy. When hes at work hes constantly looking to keep himself occupied so he doesnt feel the urge to smoke as much. When he got home was the worst. Hed sleep an hour or so after work then took up decorating what needed doing. He also took up a hobby, in this case fish. The money he save from packets of tobacco he has put towards his fish and his garden. He doesnt miss smoking now, he is too wrapped up in his pond, his flowers, his garden and his fish !

Its hard for anyone to stop smoking when they dont have a constant alternative. My brothers trick was to put his passion into his new hobby and it worked for him. He did also admit though, there were times when friends came around for some drinks and they were smoking around him when he sneaked in the odd ciggy but now hes off them and totally wrapped around his new hobby.

It wont work for everyone, and you have to show some form of will power to keep going, but this is one method that worked for my brother. I just thought id share it with anyone trying to give up. :)

Being a non-smoker I must admit I find it really hard to comprehend smoking 20+ a day.

Is it ignorance that keeps smokers doing it? Or it is not caring that your improving that death wish with every fag?

Not having a go, just interested in what goes through the mind of a smoker?

Good for you for quitting mate, i've been giving up and starting again since I was 17 (so that's half me life now!). Have always been partial to a toke so that is what often gets me back smoking the rollies. I got to May last year without smoking after quitting at New Year. Have only had a couple of J's and one night smoking so far this year so i'm feeling pretty good about it. I STRONGLY suggest you read Alan Carr's book called 'EASY WAY', it is VERY helpful, VERY cleverly written and will get you looking at smoking in a very different way. He kinda makes you feel like a complete fool for smoking, and by doing this it takes the will-power/perception that you are missing out (and always will be) feeling that accompanies every smoker when they give up. It's an excellent book and it has helped thousands of smokers to quit. I'd read it over any nicorette patch.

That's the real challenge though mate, most people quit, then start up again, feel terrible, submit to it all and then simply go back to smoking full on again, pushing all the thoughts of giving up to one side for another year or so. I should know, I've done it enough times! Buy that book and read it mate, seriously, it's very good.

I smoke and wont quit. And i'll tell you why. Why do many people quit? because they are told its bad for them. Im in a good position, I have seen old people (through my missus) who live through a variety of ages, 72 (her dad, who smoked), 42 (her cousin, who didnt smoke), 86 (her aunty, didnt smoke but worked in a nursing home were old people constantly smoked), 84 (another aunty who did smoke) and all through cancer. My attitude is this, im going to die of cancer. Whether or not it is my doing it is the common killer.  One way or another we will die around the 70-80 mark unless we are really unlucky. Barry, dont feel guilty about sneaking in a couple of ciggys, unless all our charitible contributions towards cancer research result in seeing some kind of result, we are all going the same way. Its nature who decides, not us, and not whether or not we quit smoking that determines that. If it was as black and white as that, why dont we ban all kinds of transport with the gasses released from the engines and exhausts that also cause cancer? smoking is a no but bus faires can be raised and cause the same effect? Dont feel guilty, live life to the fullest, when you go you will have no say in it regardless. Just ask Roy Castle.
