you must start to ask yourself what is real and what is not, the Lamp post is a reference to lion the witch and the wardrobe, the island might well be the real worl and anything outside that is not real, you can only die if you die on the island.

in The lion the witch and the wardrobe the lampost was used to show you the way back home to the real world (in lost it could be the lampost is also showing you the way back to the real world, the island).
thats just one thing usedby the Lost makers to try to make us think.
I still feel that in the end we will find out that the plane crash lot are the ones that set the island up and are The Others. The numbers that needed to be put into the computer were to keep the island from moving, they needed to think of a set of numbers that they will not forget. Hurley has a set in mind , his loto numbers, and thats how they ened up being used, Hurley will also turn out to be the one doing all the booking and thats why his numbers turn up a lot.
