Great game for us to win. I didn't think Lampard should have been sent off but in current times (with Mike Riley as ref too) you can't dive in, studs up and knee high off the ground. It's dangerous so that's why I think it was red. I'd have thought a yellow was fairer as he did get the ball.

I didn't see Bosingwa's challenge on Benny Noon (stream stoppage!) but if it went unpunished then he can be done by the video panel.

Player ratings:

Reina 7: Don't think he had a decent effort to save. Controlled the area well though and his distribution was good.

Arbeloa 7: Tried to get forward as much as possible but his delivery could have been better.

Aurelio 8: Similar to Arbeloa but he did put in a few better balls!

Carra 8: Another commanding performance and got forward well to compress the play.

Skrtel 8: Kept Anelka and then Drogba under wraps (along with Carra)

Masch 7: Good work winning the ball back frequently but got needlessly booked for niggly fouls.

Alonso 9: Opponents need to realise you aren't allowed to tackle him :p Controlled the pace of the game again. Gareth who?

Gerrard 7: Linked up well with Torres. Loses 2 marks for the pathetic dive. No need for it!

Kuyt 7: Usual performance. Good harrying and solid performance but lacking that magic spark.

Riera 4: Did someone swap him over Christmas? I'm a big fan but he couldn't do a thing right today! Thankfully it didn't cost us and I'm sure he'll be better in future games.

Torres 9: Did extremely well considering every time the ball came near him he had at least 3 Chelsea players on him. He also did a couple of good things in the last few minutes...:D

Subs:

Benny Noon 8: When he was coming on I thought "here we go again, more ineffective wingers". Happy to say I was wrong! He looked dangerous and deserved to score.

Babel 6: Didn't really get into the game but it tends to take him 10t into the flow of games. That needs to speed up if he wants a future here.

N'Gog 6: Well, he didn't mess anything up...

Overall team rating 8: Took long enough but we looked comfortable against a side supposedly much better than us.

I thought that display overall showed up our main problem today, inability to punish teams that we dominate. Yes we did punish them eventually but my god we let them off the hook too many times throughout the game.

Once Benayoun went on and Torres had a bit more support up top he looked more like last seasons player. Benayoun ain't my cup of tea but today and last Wednesday he has been one of our most creative players and maybe deserves a run in the team, hopefully in a more adventurous team going into league matches that we MUST win to revive a championship challenge.

With you on that mate!  Loving Xabi's mean streak this season

In fairness though it wasn't that clear cut imo.  Lampard knew Alonso was gonna try and kick through the ball there and he hung his foot out with studs showing, which is against the rules.  I can't believe he got a straight red for it though.  If it was our player I'd have been disappointed.  I'm not convinced it changed the game that much though, we were the better team before and after the red card.

FERNANDO TORRES LIVERPOOL'S NUMBER NINE!!

made up with today, hopefully we can get ourselves on a run now and have a good push for the title :)
All round the fields of Anfield Road
Where once we watched the King Kenny play (and could he play!)
Stevie Heighway on the wing
We had dreams and songs to sing
'Bout the glory, round the Fields of Anfield Road

I'm so glad that we're blessed with 2 world class players in Torres and Gerrard. Only a world class striker like Torres would have the guile, speed of thought and skill and technique to score that 1st goal. Once again, Torres is the difference between 3 points and 1 point.

The 2 goals aside, I'm actually quite disappointed with our attacking play especially when playing against a subdued Chelsea side. Benayoun clearly showed what we've been missing up front and clearly showed the gulf in skills between him and Rafa's fav son - Kuyt! He should have started ahead of Kuyt! Benayoun should have come on for Kuyt, not Riera when we're searching for that elusive goal.

Anyway, dun wanna dampen the spirits here. Let's enjoy the victory and hope we keep on winning for the rest of the season. No more draws please!

Good performance that I thought. They were obviously unlucky with the sending off (which was a ridiculous decision lets be honest) but I thought we were the better side before that anyway. They confirmed the impression I got from watching them at Old Trafford, namely that they are a shadow of Mourinho's Chelsea (and probably Avram Grant's team as well to be truthful)  while we were much better than we have been of late.

It's quite possible that this "must win the match" thing will do us a favour from now on. For one thing, it ought to persuade the manager from entering into his more eccentric modes when picking the team, and for another it should mean that we'll press on in the last twenty minutes. It did look for long periods as if it was going to be another frustrating day at the office. I'm sure it also crossed the managers mind when Lampard got sent off (because it certainly crossed mine) that just perhaps a striker on the bench wouldn't be a bad idea, but thankfully not for the first time Torres came to the rescue.

It was a wonderful strikers goal the first one, with the exceptional movement making it (along with some poor goalkeeping). It was a well deserved win overall, and we move on. I did say in one of my essays earlier on that if we did beat Chelsea, I wouldn't be surprised if we then picked a ridiculous team down at Portsmouth and failed to win there. I'm usually wrong, so hopefully I live up to my record this time. This game certainly proved anyway that on the odd occasion that we pick our best team these days, we aren't too bad a side.
