No, he must have had 'other' motives.  :kungfu:

in 2004 -2005 season, 2nd half of the season.... I remember rafa suddenly changing to a very flexible 4-5-1/4-3-3 'strange' formation that we never ever played before (I swear!)... the result was a series of easy wins 3 or 4 games on the trod... with gerrard and crouch linking well with wingers like kewell and the spanish guy from real madrid that we swapped owen with...lots of goals... that turned out to the benefit of the team...

PS. ok i don't know why i quoted LFC's post it was irrelevant to my point...

My point is there was no need to change the formation, play a strange team lineup, even before he took Torres, Gerrard and Carra off.

As I have said before IF anyone can explain why he changed a winning formation for that one game before reverting back to 4-4-2 in the following very important game I would be interested to hear it.

I think you have answered your own question here mate.

He tried something, it never worked, so he reverted back to tried and tested.

Which leads back to my original point, why change something if it isn't broken ?

Just read the Reading thread Leon, we have Rafa called everything from a f*ckwit to crazy for playing that formation. No one can explain why he changed things.

I am one of the few that actually tried to defend him! But I still said I couldn't understand why he played that formation.

So do I......I think he was trying to be too clever.

I think he was trying to show how clever he was.

Good point  :nod

Yet, on reflection you think he palyed that team and formation and tactics, NOT to win the game, but JUST TO SHOW HE WAS CLEVER ?

I thought it showed he was very clever.

I think he got a tick and a ickle smiley face off of the teacher.

Probably to make himself look clever, or for some other motive.

I think he played that team and formation not ONLY to win the game but to show how clever he was.

I think he got a big red cross and a boll0cking myself. He didn't repeat the mistake did he ?

If it had worked he would no doubt have been "A GENIUS" mate.

My point is and has been there was no need for anything "clever" against Reading.

MAke yer mind up. I thought yer point was:

Rafa seemed at times more interested in showing how clever he was rather than picking a team that would win the game.
