on a previous mb i had a running argument with someone that our main priority this summer was a left sided attacker and he said it was another striker . well we got the striker and its not working and tbh cant see it working while we have no width. as i said to himi whats the point in having two great strikers if you cant get the ball to them and they feed of scraps cause teams nulify us through the middle - as has been shown in the last two games.

And what happens if Torres gets injured ?

then you have babel and ngog even nemth and pacheco or kuyt and god forbid voronin  - did we really need to spend 20 mil on a back up ? i like keane dont get me wrong but think he was a luxury we cant afford . we had bigger priorities this summer.

It might take the manager a bit of time to get to it but a 4-2-3-1 with Gerrard and Babel running rampant on the outside and Keane playing in the hole is the way forward.

so  moving gerrard from a position he was outstanding at last season and formed a lethal partnership with torres just so keane can fit in ?

Compare the players you just listed with Uniteds and Chelsea's attack

Rooney   Drogba
Tevez     Anelka
Saha      Kalou
Ronaldo  Shevchenko

Think the gulf in not only class but experience is very notable.

I think we all agree that we need a left sided player and probably a right as well, jury is still out on Babel as a regular starter.
Rafa seems to be doing what he can to get Barry, so cant see what your problem is that he strengthened one of our weakest areas (attack)

well you can take saha chavchenko out of the list as they both done nothing for their teams

both kalou and ronaldo are wide players plus the likes of man utd and chelsea can afford to spend millions on back up players where as we cant .and have wasted 10 mil on getting another striker when we would of been better of getting someone for around 5-10 mil and then spending more money on a wide attacker.

our weakest area last year wasnt up front attack as we scored plenty it was in the wide attacking areas and how rafas pursuit of barry solves this i have no idea as the guy is a defensive mid .

We don't even know what formation we are going to play when everyone is back but I would be very surprised if we stick with the 4-4-2 with so many of our personnel being better suited to the 4-2-3-1. I expect Keane to be in the '3' somewhere where he might not score quite as many but will certainly be a big threat.

I agree with some of what you are saying, it is clear that we need better quality wide attacking players. But maybe there arent any that were available or affordable.

What i disagree on is whether we needed Keane, i think we definately did. Not only is he a great player to bring in if Torres is not fit or (cough) rotated  :D
But he is also a clever enough player to play alongside Torres or just behind. We were very short in that department despite all the names you listed.
Only Torres out of all of them is proven.
What we have now is another top player who once he has settled in will score and create goals, cant see how Rafa can be criticised for that one mate.

i just think with our budget spending 20 mil on a striker was a luxury we really couldnt afford mate - yeah we did need someone else up front but not at that price and at the expense of bigger priority . like i say i like keane a lot and hope he does work out but i can see him being played and shoe horned into the team to the detrement of the team - seen it in the last couple of games . hopefully he can adapt to a different role within a 4-2-3-1 (which is think is our best formation) maybe on the left or right or in gerrrard role but then why is rafa after barry ?

Who are the wide players that you feel would of been affordable, that would come to Liverpool and that are better players than Keane ?

Not saying there arent any like, just wanting your opinion.

well imo you can look to players like Silva,Podolski(who covers both areas),Arshavin (initally but now prob way too expensive)- even cough up an extra 10 mil for benzema who can play both areas. even downing would add that extra width.

Silva reportedly turned down united cos he wants to stay in Spain, Podolski i like but dont think he is better than Keane and they do play similar positions.
Arshavin looks top class but the money they wanted would of been a gamble with his wages in there as well.

Downing we could still get if rumours are to be believed.

apparenlt another person we could be looking at is Drenthe is has no chance of breaking into the madrid team- could be another cheaper option.

my first choice would be silva and think he will be perfect for us plus he has plenty of time to develop

Drenthe from what i have seen looks a decent player, decent pace can play left back or left midfield and is a very strong robust player. Would deffo be worth a look.
