No, in games we've been quite good and got medals, like the 49ers (sailing), Judo (hell I just realised I don't know how many sports are said in english) and many others, we just got diplomas but no medals.
Only 1 gold for cyclism and one bronze so far.
Nadal, and the basketball guys will get probably another one. We're not as strong in hockey over grass as we used to be. The handball medal will be expensive, and so will be the waterpolo one.
In track and field we'll be mediocre as most of the time, unless we win a medal in the 1500m or greater distances.
The problem in Spain and I guess in many countries is that you can't be a top canoeing sport man and earn enough money to pay the bills. So either you pay those arrow shooters a grant, the ADO program, or you can't compete in the olympics. For instance a local lad that has been 4th in canoeing, demands a channel of brave waters near to San Sebastian, because otherwise he only can train in Barcelona.
This lads, and hence the medals depend on the government's extension or diminisighing of those grants and economic helps.
Quite simply I think that if the governments want more medals, they have to invest money on it, as very few sports are self-maintaining in economic terms. I'm sure that the reason Canada isn't as present in the olympics is that the government is investing money elsewhere!
Spain is bound to have a mediocre position in the medal table, I guess at the end we'll have something like 5 gold, 5 silver and 14 bronzes. Won by the odd boxer, or the odd track cyclist. We're traditionally better in group sports than individual ones.

Highlight of the games so far: after much hype from the Canadian media one of our numpty swimmers misses out on a bronze in the 200M breast stroke by 1/100th of a second because he didn't completely stretch for the wall.
The national mood:

Only 547 days until the start of the Winter Olympics, though!
And I see the Vancouver hippies have pulled out all the stops with the official mascots.

Meet the Mascots
Yeah the winter olympics..... to be held in Russia, in Sochi, which is next to...... Georgia. And Russia and Georgia are having a little..... war right now.
I can see tourists flocking to that one by the bicycle load.
