To be honest I always thought London would get it because France blew it by Chirac sayin that the best thing britain has given the world id mad cow disease and Madrid blew it when England played Spain in a friendly and there were racist chants.

i'm delighted london's got the games. not that it'll make one jot of difference to my life but it's nice to see a british city winning

personally i love london, it's all it's quirks and foibles and sh*t-houses that make it a city of character, and giving the games to the east end will benefit the poorest areas by drastically improving transport, housing etc and providing shed-loads of jobs in the most multicultural area of town

my ONLY concern is that the local council-tax payers will foot too much of the bill only to find their own neighbourhood gets all gentrified and they can't afford to live there anymore

well said, personally i dont care much for the olympics but if it improves my part of town (im from the host borough) then im all for it. Agreed with what you say about the locals not being able to afford to live in there own area anymore, house prices are set to rocket over the next five years and most people round here dont have much so the likes of me probably wont be able to buy house in future! but hopefully the games will be a huge success, not just for London but for the whole of the U.K.
