The Swiss international defender is leaving Dortumund this summer and going to the Premier League on a three year contract.
Philipp Degen has been with Dortmund for three years now. He's currently sidelined with injury. And maybe he's already played his final match for the BVB. The Spaniard wanted Degen at all costs and has prophecised, club-internally, that Degen will cut it in the fastest, best and richest league in the world with his running ability and his technique.
The only thing that's unsure is whether Benitez will still be Liverpool's coach and thus Degens manager next season. The American club owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett fell out with eachother months ago. Benitez has sided with Hicks, at least in public, entering into a political game. It's a dangerous path.
The next Swiss after Henchoz
Liverpool FC last won the championship in 1990, but the club isn't simply living off the past with a total of 18 championship titles, 7 FA cups, 7 league cups, 5 Champions League titles and 3 UEFA Cup wins. Together with Manchester United, Chelsea and Arsenal, Liverpool makes up the big four of England. Jamie Carragher at the back, Steven Gerrard in midfield and Fernando Torres (bought last summer for approx. £25 million) up front are the leading figures in a club with an estimated salary cap of £40 million. The Reds won the unforgetable Champions League final against Milan in Istanbul in 2005. They faced Milan in the final again in 2007 and will play the second leg of the semi-final against Chelsea on Wednesday. Just took a look through some BVB boards, well they all look quite happy to get rid of him, to say the least and cant believe he has joined Liverpool...
Mostly saying that his technique isnt good enough, his positional awareness is abmysall and most of them say, that he wasn't good enough while playing for them. And they finished 9th last season and are currently in 13th place in the Bundesliga.

couldnt find any vids on yootube but i have to admit im a bit underwhelmed from what ive heard of him, ill save judgement until ive seen him play and any player coming to liverpool fc will have my support but fu,ck me shouldnt we be going after bigger fish?
i do hope he turns out to be a gem and the reason were buying him cheap is because were saving the money for a few worldclass attackers/wingers

I still think we'll get a quality FB in the summer, even if Degen is coming, but we'll probably sell both Finnan and Risse.

Hicks and Gillett are no longer on speaking terms and the turmoil at Anfield has raised questions over the Spaniard's future. But following talks with Hicks, sanctioned by Gillett and Parry, at the club's training ground this week, Benítez believes he can now focus on the summer market, and players such as Aston Villa's Gareth Barry, the Wigan midfielder Antonio Valencia, the Athletic Bilbao defender Fernando Amorebieta and Borussia Dortmund's full-back Philipp Degen.
"It was a very positive meeting," Benítez said. "We spoke about some targets and everybody now knows the names and how to progress, so it was positive. All of them were not in the meeting, but everybody now knows the situation. If you have a target and you say, 'OK, I have a target', you need to speak with everyone about the price and how to progress, but everybody knows now, so I think we have progressed.
"Clearly the key is to inform everyone. If everyone knows the situation, it is much better. I have a responsibility as the manager. People talk about Hicks and Gillett, but we have two owners and a chief executive and a responsibility for improving the squad. We needed to say to the owners, 'These are the targets and we think we can go in this way,' and that was the purpose of the meeting."
Although Benítez spent in excess of £40m last summer on the Spanish centre-forward Fernando Torres from Atletico Madrid, Ryan Babel from Ajax and Yossi Benayoun from West Ham United, the cost of his squad remains some distance short of those assembled by Chelsea and Manchester United. Peter Crouch, Jermaine Pennant and John Arne Riise are all likely to attract interest this summer, moreover, and Benítez believes he can improve his squad without spending huge sums.
"I'm sure we won't need too much," he said. "Our squad is much better and we maybe need to sign four or five players, but we will not need to spend big, big money. It is all about doing the deals at the right moment. I will not give you any names, but there are some players in the top sides who are not performing well and their cost was massive. Benitez revealed yesterday that he is ready to pledge his long-term future to Liverpool after being given the summer transfer budget he demanded.
Following a lengthy meeting with club co-owner Tom Hicks on Wednesday that he described as "very positive", the Spanish boss claimed he has already made progress on signing "four or five" players for next season.
And The Mirror can reveal that Wigan winger Antonio Valencia surprisingly tops a list that also includes England midfielder Gareth Barry, Swiss international full-back Philipp Degen, Spanish defender Fernando Amorebieta and former Manchester City winger Albert Riera.
Benitez has made inquiries about Valencia and was ready to spend around £6million on the Ecuador star who can play on both flanks.
But apparent interest from Manchester United has pushed the fee towards £10m, well beyond Liverpool's budget. Negotiations are already under way to thrash out a deal.
Wigan boss Steve Bruce said: "It might be difficult to keep hold of him. If the big clubs are coming in it's hard to stand in the boy's way. "He's 22, he's quick, he goes past people. Where do you see them these days?
"He is a dying breed with an exceptional future."
Degen has already agreed in principle a free transfer from Borussia Dortmund while Barry would cost around £15m from Aston Villa. Benitez said: "I am confident Mr Hicks will back me now and I think everyone agrees with him.
"The key is that everyone knows. I spoke to Tom Hicks, but George Gillett and Rick Parry they know, and everyone agrees. "Because of that I am confident we will progress and I am satisfied it can work."

That list is just a smokescreen, there's no freaking way those players would make us a better side.

None of those players mentioned, play in the top sides. I think that Rafa has targeted some big names, but does not want our rivals to know about them. That's why he was so mad when the transfer targets were leaked to Bayern, it's obvious that they were important players, otherwise no one would care.

valencia and seville have dropped a level this year i reckon well buy a player or players from these teams as we all know rafa loves to buy from spain and to be honest there are a few players worth taking from them teams...
