not one to play in the dark.

Bioshock is a great game and gorgeous looking, but I object to paying for a game that has no online and no replay value.

...you mean there's no racing in it!  :p

I have to say, that BIOSHOCK was an amazing piece of entertainment. Although probably best suited for a couple of run throughs. It wasn't a game i could imagine playing again and again. Maybe in a few months time or so - But for a tenner mate...thats a steal! And if you certainly are going to put it on ebay for a similar amount - i should want to snap your hand off meself! Give us a PM if you decide to.

lol, cheeky b@stard, but true  :D

Personally I think any game these days that doesn't have any online aspect is unacceptable, the main thing these days that separates games from the only 8/16 bit days is not the graphics but the online play, you can buy a game like COD or Halo and after finishing it you can still be playing it online 2 years down the line and for me thats value for money.

But like you Red37 said it's a steel for a tenner  :)

Too true about value for money with internet play.

I bought a game back in 1998 called Campaign series East Front which has pbem or online feature. Im still sending emails out to this day with turns to fellow wargaming opponents around the world.

Talk about value for money though funny enough the company went belly up. Guess they made their product too damn good value for money

Online play is fantastic..wonderful...immersive...bloody good fun etc. And in the majority of the present crop of titles those adjectives by and large hold to be true. Im all for it.

But...

Developers are becoming nonchalant/complacent to the requirements of gamers - even lazy, to the point where typically, the average 'campaign' length of the SP portion of their games offer little more than a few cursory (albeit intense) hours of involvement. Almost like the Hor's D'oeuvres before the main Entree, as though it is THE sole purpose to provide multiplayer (ergo: Xbox Live subscription) features almost above all else. Recent titles are suitable prime examples of this method. And while i applaud the fact that you could in theory sit on your backside on the sofa and indulge in a whole cornucopia of joyful virtual exploits with nothing more strenuous than the timely excecution of a few button presses for days on end and still not exhaust the entire library of 'Live' enabled fun that is out there on the market. I would still like to see the Single player aspect getting as much 'love' from the devs. Then, we can debate 'value for money'. Infact the only such example of note which ticks all the criteria of late for me - was The Orange Box.

I guess we all know the real reasons why though at the end of the day...

Games like BIOSHOCK and their ilk should be applauded. Even if they are not your 'cup of tea' in any case its refreshing to note that not every (good) game has to be infested with bellends screeching and wailing/cursing into your headset/TV Speakers every 30 seconds. Expand the MP yes...but don't forget the SP, game industry.

I agree with you mate, devs should put more time into the single player part of games but if you look at the amount of people that play online it sort of justifies what their doing, these days the majority of people play the multiplayer in mode in the games they play as they enjoy playing against their mates and testing themselves against the best in the world on their favorite games.

It's one of those arguments that cannot be won as their are positives to both side but I don't think that 50-50 development would work, plus their is a lot of money to be made online with downloadable content.

Games like Bioshock, Lost Odyssey are great games but not the type of game that will appeal to all as the type of games they are their is no way you could add multiplayer aspects to them, for example with Bioshock what would the online play be, you couldn't make a deathmatch scenario or anything like that ???

Of course, you wouldn't expect to see BIOSHOCK fractured in that way. It would dilute the 'whole'. Can't see a lot of scope within the gameworld where you COULD employ multiplay. Beyond the normal yawnfest of a Deathmatch - Bots maybe? (another feature that has virtually been discarded) Rightly so in many cases...however it would be a bonus to have in certain games, for those times when you are new to the game or simply do not have a connection up and running. Clearly a stop-gap feature at its best. Though it wasn't always the case, remember. Pre Live, that was almost all you got (sometimes there are fond memories of that too though)

Yes, i agree that the ends justifies the means...and while we (the target audience) continue to lap up these (in most cases) extremely entertaining products. The trend wil continue to gather momentum. There is still a case IMO, for there to be an equal spread of the blanket, covering all bases. This of course is restricted and often dependant upon the company's budget. And the best way for them to swell the coffers to make a healthy return on their time and investment.....reach as large a base as possible. Which is all fine and admirable from a business standpoint. As long as the product in question offers genuine 'value' - something that sadly, is becoming as rare as hens teeth.

Still, you can't please em all...perhaps you shouldnt necessarily be aiming to. The good times roll on though (for those of us with Broadband) and an unquenchable thirst for even greater thrills. All good stuff - mostly.

I bought Dawn of War: Soulstorm for the pc on friday and although there are a couple of nice touches I just feel like ive been robbed ! Its basically Dark Crusade with loads of bugs and the multiplayer is awful. And it seems to take ages to load between missions on campaign.
Has anyone else bought this or am I the only idiot?

Ok I've gotten myself back into PC gaming with a bang and I've put together a new gaming PC pver the weekend. It is based around a Q6600 quad core and a 8800 GTS 512 graphics card with 4 gigs of high speed memory.

I've also used Vista 64 bit.

I plan on overclocking the bejaysus out of it but I had difficulty in getting it stable as it was blue screening all over the place. It turned out that I had memory errors and after reseating the ram it has settled down.

I have to say that despite getting bucket loads of criticism I find Vista 64 to be one slick mofo of an operating system.

I also bought Crysis and plan on modding Oblivion to the high moon.

I see many spelling and grammar mistakes but I don't go round correcting people.
