On a serious note don't go for a PCI card their cheap and for a reason, always go for an AGP one.

Not all motherboards support AGP so the only option is a PCI card.

My Pc is fairly old now (Radeon 9200, 512 Ram AMD Athlon 2700+ running XP) and i'm looking at buying a few bits, from ebay or wherever, new or old,  for it to spruce things up. I'm not looking for something near what JBG does with his PC's as I don't play bleeding edge games like Crysis or SupCom.

I've been looking at a few graphics cards to help out with performance for the likes of HL2, PES6 etc and someone mentioned getting something like a radeon 9800 XT - cheap to buy with enough bang for my buck to help games run a bit smoother. I've seen one on ebay for about £8!

Basically, i want to know, considering the budget I am setting (looking at £8 graphics cards, you can probably guess), what can anyone recommend I should look for? Is it worth looking at a slightly better graphics card, or investing in some more ram or even a new proccessor?

I'm aware that really I should start from scratch and all that - however, i'm just looking for a quick fix as i've got a spanking new PS3 coming in May which will facilitate my COD4 needs just fine.

Thanks in advance peeps. :)

Best advise I can give is get a 360 and you won't have to upgrade every 5 minutes, oh dear a PS3, just out of interest mate why did you choose a PS3 over a 360?

COD4 = Xbox Live :;):

PM JBG cos he's the best person to speak to about PC's and games  :;):

I've gone for the PS3 for a few reasons - Remote Play as i've got a PSP and downloads, Blu-Ray, especially considering the demise of HD-DVD and i'm a fan of the MGS series and can't wait for MGS4.

Loads of me mates have got one as well, so I can play them online on PES 2008. Much prefer to play against mates than against some random, its the extra kudos I guess.  :D

Fair do's mate, I agree you gotta buy what your mates have, I only know one person with a PS3 and he's got a 360 which he uses more, my other mate use to have a PS3 but sold it cos he was sick of the lack of decent exclusive games.

Pity you can't play games cross platform like you can with Shadowrun  :(

Not all motherboards support AGP so the only option is a PCI card.

99% of decent ones do though  :;):

1/ Increasing my RAM from 2 gb to 4gb (only a 32bit windows system so only 1gb to 1.5gb actual increase?)would cost about £35

2/ New graphics card (256mgb 7900gs at present) 8800 GT would cost about £150?

3/ Second 256mgb 7900gs card ? Are there any games using 2 graphics cards yet?

my biggest upgrade performance wise was from 2gb ram up to 4gb performance was better by far than any of my other upgrades!

Thanks Daxy, I think thats what I will try (cheapest option too  :)  )

That would be the wrong move Saint. Trust me, I know these things, while ugrading your RAM will give you a boost it will be nothing compared to upgrading your graphics card.

2mb is still fine for the vast majority of today's games.

Chaps, you're a bit behind the times, AGP is now ancient tech, PCI Express 2.0 is the most uptodate GPU interface.

Does anyone know how much difference there is in the trade in value and the cash value in Game?

So, if the trade in value is £25, how much cash would they give you?

I traded in my old style PS2 - they offered me £25 trade or £14.26 cash.

I think I will wait till Far Cry 2 comes out then mate and get more Ram and a new card then. I usually change my computer every 4 years with one major upgrade after about 2 years, however with prices being so low now I may do a couple of upgrades with this computer.
