Kop stadium plans shelved
By David Maddock 15/12/2007
Liverpool are poised to scrap plans for a new stadium after a bid to borrow £700million to fund the development was hit by the credit crunch devastating money markets.

The club's American owners George Gillett (above) and Tom Hicks will be forced to settle for a smaller loan.

That will mean an embarrassing U-turn on the proposal for a 76,000-seater arena and leave less cash for manager Rafa Benitez to spend in the transfer market.

It is not the news Benitez will want to hear as he prepares his team for their crucial Premier League clash with Manchester United tomorrow and plans for a long-anticipated meeting with the US duo on Monday.

Hicks had asked his Texan architects to rejig the designs for a replace for Anfield, with revenue generation a key element in the new £400m scheme.

But they will have to go back to an initial 60,000-seat plan or redesign again on a much smaller scale.

Liverpool count cost of Stanley park plan
Last updated at 08:49am on 15th December 2007

Liverpool are reviewing plans for their new stadium in Stanley Park after estimated costs continued to escalate with concerns that the final figure could reach £500million.

American co-owners George Gillett and Tom Hicks revealed an ambitious new design for the 60,000-seater arena, with a potential capacity of almost 80,000 in the years ahead, after gaining control of the club nine months ago and were granted planning permission last month.

Chief executive Rick Parry said that he hoped building work could begin next spring with a projected opening for the start of the 2011-2012 season.

But now Gillett and Hicks, who have a great deal of experience of developing commercial and sports sites in their own country, are studying proposals again with advisers to decide whether to downgrade the current plans or revert to the earlier scheme with modifications.

Talks about a new stadium started more than seven years ago.

When the first design was drawn up five years ago, the estimated cost was £80m.

Whilst I appriciate your optimism, it is also reported in the mail and the times. I can't see us ever having a new stadium at this rate.  :(
From Shankly to Brendan we follow our team, Rome to Istanbul we've all lived the dream. Our journey is long, our goal stays the same, to keep for our children the famous red name.

This all makes me very angry, if it is true then it is a horrednous kick in the teeth for the club.

I know we should not look for people to blame but it really makes you understand how poorly managed the club has been for the past 20 years. At a time when Man U and Arsenal were investing their grounds and (with the case of Man U) developing their global fan base, what have we been doing? Scratching around for investment... now we have it we are a considerable distance behind our main rivals and with the economy as it is, it's going to be even more difficult to catch up.

I really hope this story is yet another fabrication, if it isn't I fear that there are troubled times ahead....

The news just keeps getting worse, now they have decided we can't afford Torres, so we are getting Jermain Defoe instead  :(

I sometimes forget about the new stadium it's been draggin on that long, for the time being I'm more worried about the league position and getting quality players, the new stadium is an added bonus.

Following press speculation on Saturday morning concerning Liverpool's new stadium in Stanley Park, Rick Parry today said: 'We remain absolutely committed to the building of a new stadium which will improve on the original design'
Chief Executive Rick Parry told liverpoolfc.tv: "We remain absolutely committed to the building of a new stadium which will improve on the original design inherited by Tom Hicks and George Gillett when they came into the club.

"It will have a capacity of around 70,000, be higher quality and have a substantially increased Kop which will form the centrepiece of the new plans.

"Ever since the original designs were unveiled, we have been continuously revising and refining with the intention of delivering the best possible solution to our future needs.

"The situation in the credit markets has not affected our design, programme, or implementation of building our new stadium. The priority has always been to build a winning team on the pitch and everything else we do is geared towards that."

Hopefully this puts an end to the speculation. I still don't trust Hicks or Gillett though

Glad to see it's not just me then.

I get the feeling something's not right and I'd go as far as to say I reckon they want out.  First they don't back Benitez in the transfer market and coincidently there might be a problem with the new stadium (Parry doesn't exactly fill me with confidence either despite what he says).  Something smells.  Watch this space.

If there's one thing I learned from experience a long time ago, and I don't give a flying f*ck what someone thinks about my following comment, is that the vast majority of Yanks are just full of sh*t. They talk sh*t. Act sh*t. God gave them one outstanding gift, and that's just to be sh*t talkers. Most of them do my head in. Oh, and I don't trust the c*nts either.

What do you mean they haven't backed him in the transfer market!?!!   The only transfer period we have had so far with them in charge we got RECORD SIGNING Fernando Torres and Babel for over 10, Lucas wasn't cheap, Yossi, and a couple mil on Leto
