There are things that only happen in english speaking countries. In any latin bar any debate between rugby and football would be dismissed with laughter. Except some parts of France, we all know they are rare.

Football is what matters. Everything else is folklore.

Ive played quite a bit of Rugby League - and i can assure you, it is a very tactical, skillful game. Of course there are glaring differences between the two sports...but to say Rugby involves no aspect of skill (or at least little of it) is way wide of the mark.

The modern Rugby player is a honed athlete - you do not get the great big lumbering prop forwards of old very often nowadays, they do exist - but they are not the norm. As for direct passages of play breaking through an opposition defence - have you not witnessed the increasing amount of ball play, that is prompted by the 'kicking game' in the Super/National Leagues...some of these guys can split a defence in two with the dexterity of their footwork now.

Agreed.

I agree with Bamaga's sentiments about the aussies, but Rugby shouldn't be dismissed as a sport that requires litle or no skill.

It also depends on how you define skill.

Put simply, football is miles more skillful than Rugby. Rugby is more about determination, strength and good handling skills than anything else.

Football requires all of these, plus agility, anticipation, heading skill, perception, two-footed ability, passing, shooting, tackling, jumping, timing, intelligence and speed.
Rugby uses a lot of these, but to a much lesser extent.

The way I would put it to your Aussie collegue is that footballers can play rugby much better than rugby players can play football.

i am certain that a top rugby player has just as much skill as a top footballer, they are just different skills. the fact is top players these days are more professional and dedicated to training, in fact its been that way since the early nineties
