Big plans for new Anfield stadium
Jul 9 2007 by Luke Traynor, Liverpool Echo

LIVERPOOL FC are to unveil a new planning application to make their stadium the biggest in the Premiership.

If approved, the 80,000-capacity ground might not be open until nearly 2010.

The Reds are planning to reveal changed blueprints for the stadium to city planners on July 25.

They will showcase a 60,000 cap-acity stadium, with the design able to accommodate a 20,000 extension later.

Liverpool’s new billionaire owners are keen to push the Reds’ total event-ual capacity to close to 80,000.

If that went ahead, the new Anfield would be bigger than the Old Trafford home of rivals Manchester United, which holds 76,000.

The revised application, if successful, would delay fans taking up their seats for an extra 18 months.

Co-owner Tom Hicks said: “The city council planners will receive the final plans on July 25.

“The initial capacity will be 60,000 as previously approved, but the design will accommodate an eventual capacity in the high seventies.”

Council leader Warren Bradley said there had been some “pre-application talk” recently.

The expansion is likely to push the cost of the stadium to more than £200m.

Cllr Bradley said: “An increased capacity will mean a new application, with the traffic and environmental impact needed to be looked at again.

“That will increase the consultation period and set the timescale back by 18 months.

“The first application will remain live, if the club don’t get approval for a new application. It’s the club’s prerogative and the council will do all it can to speed things up.

“I want something to happen for the good of the area to refurbish Stanley Park and housing in Anfield.”

As part of a new application for a stadium close on 80,000 capacity, a new traffic management study will have to be carried out.

The extra 20,000 means Liverpool will be encouraged to incorporate a new Merseyrail railway station, possibly on Utting Avenue, so more people can more easily get to the ground.

Very interesting news on the ground today, with liverpool  increasing the cappacity to near on 80,000 i thought it would be straight forward, you wouldn't think there would be so much extra planning to go into the project, like the need for transport and traffic regulations, that is why they are proceeding with the current 60,000, because if they wanted the 80,000 to be developed they would have to wait for a further year for the planning permition to go through and thats before any work could start. So it makes sense to develop the 60,000 and by the time the stadium is half finished i think it will be approved an extension which they would then further increase the 60,000.So i think we will end up with the 80,000 when the ground officially opens, this of course would knock back the opening of the stadium.

Yeah these delays of the revealing of the plans of the stadium can be annoying but also can only be good news. It seems that everyone behind the scenes are really putting a lot of effort in on making this stadium perfect and if it does take longer for the team to create a hopeful "masterpiece" than i for one, am all for it.

If it was rushed and it was revealed to early then it could have spoiled all our expectation, so I am waiting impatiently like everyone else, but also in high expectation that this could actually be a good thing for the future of our club :)

We should build a version of "Henman Hill" outside Anfield.

A section of seating outside the stadium in front of a giant screen.

Sell tickets for it.

Manhattan would suggest "Houlding Hill"

My local team (DC United) just revealed their new stadium plan

It will be good to have a Soccer Specific Stadium (thats what they call 'em over here) in the Nations Capital. RFK used to be a GREAT American football stadium for the Redskins but they moved about 10 years ago for a 93,000 seater and now its just too old.

Nice stadium that Joe and the graphics look kinda familiar huh?

Not sure visiting fans would respect the flowerbeds mind....... you can see how US football exists without the tribalism of the English game.

well i think all that stuff was put in there because that area is reallllly run down or at least the neighborhood right next to it is. and they are building a baseball stadium around there now and pumping a ton of money into the area to fix it all up, so making it look nicer is a good way to pitch it to the city
