definately thinking of a creative midfielder, with that department lacking now that lil luis has left us.....mancini, quaresma, simao are all names that come to mind but which of these are actually available? i know we have been linked to everyone and their brother (btw i heard xabi has a bro, any1 know his position? :D  ) .... but i hope whoever it is will be versatile. and definately attack-minded with no fear of getting in the box.

Y
ou just contradict yourself, you say he would take Agger's position "simple as" and then say he would be backup for Agger, which is it?

Get this John Smeaton fella in to beef up the back and set aboot the Manure pooftas, Jimmy.

Dalglish, Souness, Hansen, Smeaton.......  :buttrock

I really think what we need is a winger that can make something out of nothing on both sides. When Kewell is playing well he is that sort of player, but it will be interesting to see whether he can get back to his best, I'll be watching the Asian cup with great interest to see how he's looking, i'm sure Rafa will be doing the same. Jermaine Pennant looked really good in the Champs League final, but i still don't think his crossing ability is up to the standard we need. So i think we really need a better right winger, as apart from Steve we have no backup there anyway. I would love to see you bring in Mancini, but after the Torres purchase i don't think we could afford him. Same thing with Lennon, hes going to cost a huge amount, but i think he would be worth it. Every time i see him play he impresses me, and hes still young, so hes only going to get better. I think we could do with another CB, but I think that isn't as important, as we have 3 class players for that position still.

Questions really are:

1- Who do we need?

2- Who is potentially available?

3- Who can we afford?

I think that we could afford Mancini after selling Cisse and Bellamy, combined with whats left of rafa's '07 spending money, but we couldn;t afford anything  else after. there certianly wouldnt be enough for quality additions for cover at the back.  Mancini can play on either wing (although i think he is better or prefers the left) , which is huge.  Which means play him on the right with Kewell on the left until he gets hurt then play Pennant or Gerrard on the right.  I would be fine with putting all my eggs in the Mancini basket if i Knew how well Aurellio is doing on his injury recovery, who is the real Arbeloa? (he  looked like a very servicable back up when he first came and filled in nicely and came forward adn helped out in attack, but looked suspect towards the end of the season.  And what the chances are of Hobbs, Palletta, or Insua stepping up and being good enough to back up the backline.

mikel alonso, elder brother of xabi. plays for sociedad. he was invited to bolton's pre season training camp in austria by sammy lee. he is a midfielder who didnt score any goals last season. made most of his appearence as a sub.

News on possible signings for wingers....

Benítez is also in the hunt for a new winger, possibly two, and the indications from Portugal last night were that Ricardo Quaresma, of FC Porto, could fit the bill. Liverpool are said to have had a £13.5 million bid for the 23-year-old Portugal winger turned playmaker rejected, although a slightly improved offer could be enough to persuade the Portuguese club to sell.

Alessandro Mancini, of AS Roma, and Yossi Benayoun, the West Ham United midfield player, are also thought to be targets, while the manager is also hoping to force through a deal for Gabriel Heinze, the Argentina defender, even though Manchester United appear reluctant to sell him to their fiercest rivals.

Hmm, how accurate is the Times usually.

I am taking this with a pinch of salt for now.

The Times are one of the more respected papers even though a few of their columists can be a bit harsh at time. Its quite possible though.

Well, in that case, I'm taking this with a smaller pinch of salt!  :D

In any case, fingers crossed, I'll be happy with the signing of any of the names quoted.

Even if it is true expect to hear things like "we have heard nothing from.....". Its always the way until the deal is 99% done.

We have seen first hand now that Rafa has been backed for a top player so there is no reason why he wontbe backed again for the others he needs.

True enough.

A. Madrid was saying there is no bid for Torres.

Then, few days later, we have him touching the THIS IS ANFIELD sign. So, I will be keeping my fingers crossed.

Same thing happened when we signed Garcia and Alonso.

Rafas been working on these things for weeks so whatever you read in the papers is probabaly relative to like a week ago.

we blatantly need a player like christiano ronaldo, robben etc who can play both wings.....and in the big games have that extra quality than pennant and kewell seem to lack (in the big games both go missing imo, pennant in the champs league final apart)

so we looking at simao, that quasimodo bloke.....mancini.....

a left back would be nice but i dont think that will happen

a centre back possibly

and a tevez style attacking mid/striker who can link between midfield and attack

so in total...

1. winger who can play on both sides
2. left back
3. centre back
4. a tevez type attacking mid/striker (but now we in dream world)
