Big sammi to leave? - This summer

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Postby 7_Kewell » Sun May 20, 2007 7:12 pm

"Sami Hyypia has confirmed he will sit down and discuss his future with Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez after Wednesday's UEFA Champions League final.

He has featured regularly for Liverpool this term, but Benitez has made moves to bring in younger options in the centre of defence.

Hyypia is aware the writing could be on the wall for him at Anfield, but will put his future on hold until after Wednesday's meeting with Milan.

"I understand the situation and it's no problem," Hyypia said.

"I still have one year here, but if I want to do something about it in the summer, after the Champions League final is the time to talk to the manager about what is going to happen.

"I haven't been too disappointed by the season. I've played 29 games, I'm sharp and ready for games.

"If the manager wants to sign a new centre-back, I think that's a sign for me I won't be playing much.

"After the final I will sit down, think it over and see what happens."

I've suspected it for a few months now and i have a gut feeling he'll go because he wants regular football and probably has 1 or 2 years left.

Too old to start for me now with Agger coming through. A place on the bench is the best he can hope for and if thats not good enough I wouldn't blame him for wanting to move on.

He's been a class act though. Probably one of our best ever signings.

Great player and he's shown great charactor, never made a fuss when they gave the captaincy to Gerrard , or when he has lost his place in the team. If he wants more regular football he will have to move as Agger seems to have cemented his place as first choice now. Which ever team gets him is very lucky, and I hope he gets a good contract. As with Hamman I can understand him leaving but I would really like him to stay.

Offer Newcastle Hyypia and Cisse for Owen ?

yeah, at his age too he probably doesnt want to sit on the bench every week.
i`ve been a critic of houllier but i must admit they day he brought big sami to the club was imo the best signing this club has made since john barnes put pen to paper.
before sami arrived anything remotely lofted into the box was either a goal or initiated a panic stations style scramble, other teams knew we were a soft touch in the air and played on it.
look at everton games, the legend that was duncan ferguson which was built mostly on his effectiveness in derby games ceased the day the big finn walked through the doors of anfield.
with evans`s centre halves ferguson caused mayhem but it wasnt coincidental that our derby record improved vastly once sami signed.
in my eyes he`s a proper, proper legend of this club and i`m made up he won the cl with us and has the chance to win another.
if he does go i wish him well for the future and he`ll always be welcome at anfield.
he goes into my memory banks alongside the likes of yeats, smith, hansen and hughes as a great defensive servant of this club.

our defence (and goalkeeper) were a joke before sammi came in.  He gave our back 4 organisation and his presence in the box was a huge boost.  Always remember the Ueffa match against BArca...Rivaldo tried to do some tricks and run past Hypia...it didn't work and Rivaldo looked like he had run into a brick wall.   :D

Yes, he's the consummate professional who never moans to the press...he justs gets on with it.  Like Didi before him, I'll understand if he wants to move on but I'd love it if he stayed for at least another season.

If Newcastle's got any sense about them--and there's no evidence that they do, TBH--they'll move heaven and earth to sign him.  He is exactly the kind of CB they've needed for years and he's still got enough left in the tank to do it for them.  I'll be expecting the Barcodes to be throwing some significant money at us this summer to try and shake Sami loose.

I think Hyypia's words are wise and nice.

I think he has one year of contract more, and he should leave the club only if he wants to. The player has admitted as a good professional that he has played less this season, and doesn't seem unhappy with the amounts of game played (see? rotation also keeps the squad happy sometimes)

So he must decide what to do, and as he says, speaking with Rafa will help him to decide.

Anyhow, a player with his experience is good for any club, including LFC of course.

I'd be gutted if Sami left. He still has a lot to offer the club.
Okay, he hasn't played as much this season, but none of our centre backs have had injuries.
Last season (05-06), Hamman didn't get much of a look in with Momo, Gerrard and Alonso playing in the centre of the park. It looked he was surplus to requirements, yet a dislocated shoulder for Momo early in November put a different complexion on things. I seem to remember some posters on here saying how we let Hamman go prematurely.
After all, it's not common to have centre backs fully fit all season. Look at Manure this season, they lost the services of Ferdinand and Vidic towards the back end of the season. Chelsea even more so, losing Terry and Carvalho - forcing them to play their best midfielder in defence, thus derailing their title bid.
The manager has to do his best in talking Sami into seeing out his remaining year, and maybe even more. His experience will be vital in mounting a serious title challenge. Not only on the pitch, but working with the younger defenders hoping to break through.
