We sign him for free, i think let's not make judgement first. Just give him a season at least.

Didnt we get Zenden for free, and wasnt Nunez thrown into a deal to soften the blow of loosing Owen.  :D

all in all, i don´t rate the guy and they do not really rate him in germany either ... so i´m also wondering why rafa is going for him.

i think he may be just used as our fourth striker ... (replacing robbie) ... infact, i really hope so.

sounds like a poor man's Kuyt.  the fact that he is free is good and hopefully should be fine with just being a squad player, but I hope Rafa got him just to run the defense to death in training, because its not like the guy is oozing with talent or potential, he will be 28 this summer, and I wouldn't want him taking away time from Lindfield or El Zhar to get their chance at 1st team game action.

The fact that he is free and teams didnt queue for his signature says it all!!!strange decision from Rafa.

He will still take up a squad position and wages even if he is "free", whether he can add to the quality of the squad or not. You could sign 10 people off here for "free" and on less wages, but would they be worth signing?( maybe me and Stu would, but you know what I mean :D )

I can't see him making much of a difference next season, but you never know

Such is the negative feedback on the bloke, even from some people who have actually seen him play, that I have to ask the question is it a possibility that Rafa is going to convert him, Ray Kennedy style into a specialist in a completely different position to the one he currently plays? I don't know, is he our cover right-winger? left back? How tall is he? after the performance of that lad the other day in goal maybe that's the idea.

I imagine we will be unable to keep all of our current main three strikers happy if in addition we sign the pre-eminent striker we all hope for this summer. One of them will go, with Bellamy favourite (not quite done enough on the pitch, and alleged problem with golf off it).

Kuyt will be better next season after his adjustment year, and Crouch has recently been demonstrating why he should be kept. All we need now is the top man to come in, be that Eto'o, Villa, Huntelaar or whoever.

On that basis Voronin is potentially a good signing (I say potentially as I've not seen him play myself). He will replace Robbie and should improve us there (much as we all love Robbie his legs have simply gone).

So, Voronin will be an improvement over Fowler and the main striker we sign will (hopefully) be a big improvement over Bellamy.

That should be 2 of the strikeforce replaced with better, so in theory it moves us on. At the moment we can't judge Voronin yet though because his signing in only part of the puzzle, but I expect it will work out similar to what I've posted.

I've no doubt you are right St about both Voronin being the fourth man, and unfortunately (in my opinion anyway) Bellamy being sold. It doesn't though explain why Rafa specifically wanted to sign the Russian. Clearly it's not just that that he'll sit on the bench, shut up and pick up his wages (because he could have signed anybody to do that, even me) there must have been something in the way the bloke plays which attracted our attention.
Rarely have we signed anybody under Rafa, even non successful signings whom you could not see a modicum of ability in. Even Zenden hit a good shot the other month.

I totally agree with you...I live in germany and i don`t think that he's good enough to play in the premier league....he isn't even one of the top players in the Bundesliga

Why is everyone getting so worked up about this guy, he's a free transfer on I would assume fairly low wages, if he plays well good, if he doesn't we let him go, no big problem. I'm looking more forward to the big name signings in the summer.
I see Voronin as a poor version of Kuyt, i.e someone who will distract defenders allowing the other striker to nip in and get the goals, having said that I also expect Kuyt to be scoring many more goals next year.

Anyhow I reckon this's been done to death. All thats left is for people to start having a pop at each other. I think we've established that Alonso has not had his best season ever in a Liverpool shirt, he is though a really good player, nobody really really wants to sell him, and that some people call him a holding midfielder and some a deep lying playmaker, but whatever you call him, he's a nice bloke and we all like him. Oh, and Masherano is also pretty good as well, and so is Makeleli. There, you didn't really need thirteen pages, that's it in a nutshell so we'll call it quits.

F.uck it, if thats the attitude we may aswell be honest now and say we still know feckall about Voronin. He's got long thats all I know, but we dont surely need anymore pages related to this thread. And while we're at there is no point discussing football atall.
Its quite ironic that Mick, loves a long and drawn out detailed discussion, about aspects of the beautiful game. But from now on, put all your theories in a "nutshell" hey Mick !

If we're looking to finish 3rd or 4th yes, some of us were counting on some quality not hit and hopes

Voronin , what a guy.

Early career

Voronin was born in the village Corjova, Dubăsari, in Transnistria. He graduated the Co-operative College of Chişinău (1961), the Soviet Union Institute for Food Industry (1971), the Academy of Social Sciences of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (1983), and the Academy of the Ministry of Home Affairs (Interior) of the Soviet Union (1991).

He began working in 1961 as the head of the bakery in the town of Criuleni. From 1966 until 1971, Voronin held the offices of vice-director of the bread factory in Criuleni and head of the bread factory in Dubăsari.

He has been elected President of the Republic of Moldova by the Parliament on April 7, 2001.

From January to April 2002, large demonstrations took place . While the demonstrations were tense at times, the government soon suppressed them with the use of extreme force that ultimately resulted in Voronin proclaiming "F'uck this I'd rather play footy .

Surely this isn't the fella Rafa signed ?

:D
