To be fair to Owen he would have missed out on England winning the World Cup if he had stayed at Madrid. :D

Back on topic Eto'o seems ideal but for missing a couple of months next season because of the African cup.

Yes, it's one of the cons. Because that cup doesn't take place in summer but in the middle of the season. He's unflexible with this things too, for him playing with Cameroon is very important and won't doubt to state that's more important than the club... which is the kind of thing fans do not like.

The cup takes place every 4 years though. Rijkaard solved this problem by leaving Eto'o out of the rotations, Eto'o played every single match before and after the cup. This way he ended up with the polemic about Eto'o not wanting to be rotated aswell.

Ultimatley whilst part of any deal could come down to a bidding war its not just about that. If the player wants to play for us then thats it. Look at how Moreientes got a 16m bid from Newcastle but look how much we got him for?

Incidentally how many years are left on Etoo's contract?

2010, in that sense, he's tied. But Barcelona will happily take some fresh money, before they receive their new TV rights deal in 2 years time.

When he signed it, doubling his wages in Barcelona, he said "I want to play 9 years in Barcelona, then retire in Mallorca".

Last month he said "I don't bring my son to some stadiums, as I have to protect him from racism. I like Anfield and it's atmosphere".

Sabre he strikes me a selfish person in general moaning about rotation. If were challanging for the league and Europe next year im sure everyone will be rotated accordingley and the last thing we need is an egoistic (if wonderfully talanted) player moaning about what games he plays in.

Yes, I understand. It sounds selfish.

FWIW, I think 91% of players think the same way about being rotated, only that they know what they should say and what they shouldn't to keep managers and fans happy.

Typical case of brutally honest guy, Eto'o.  :)

But when it comes to work in the pitch, he's the first one. When Rijkaard says "volunteer training session" he'll be there training, where as Deco and Dinho and Xavi, won't. In that sense, he's not selfish.

No I think he's exactly what we need.

Do Rooney and Ronaldo get rotated much at Man u?

Actually do Gerrard and Carra get rotated much in our squad? They do but not much because of their quality. Eto'o is a lot better than any of our strikers and therefore would be pretty much a cert for most games.

We need a few players with his passion and desire to be the best.

I think from  the few times I've seen him that he's a fantastic player and do well in English Football. I'd take him over david Villa (although to be fair I haven't seen him that often either). Eto is a break the bank kind of player in my view.

If Rafa gets Etoo then we will not have to spend a penny because it would be a swoop deal for Alonso.

Much as I love Xabi,,,, "Where do I sign!!!!"  :D
Xabi is a great player but I don't think he is essential to us, a great striker like Eto is.

Yep i feel the same love Alonso but it was intresting in him being benched against chelski and then playing against Fulam when the top boys got rested. Can see him leaving for barca come the transfer window

Mick, would you rate him highly enough to get in a bidding war with the Mancs and Chelsea over his signature though?  Granted, he's exactly the calibre of striker we need to recruit this summer but, for me, I don't want to pay 40 million or something equally ridiculous for him just because Man U's offering Barca 37.5.  There are other targets to consider in that situation, IMO.

I know he was injured for most of this season, but these were his stats for last season.

Games     Goals    Assists    Pens    Shots   On Target   Goals/Game   Goals/Shot   Goals/On Target

  34          26         2           0        110         70              0.76            0.23                0.37

Makes pretty impressive reading. The fact he only had 2 assists in 34 games shows he's a very selfish player, but when someone's scoring that much it doesn't really matter to me.

I disagree.

He works a lot for the team, he falls to the wings, go to deeper positions to touch balls, track backs, and presses. AFAICT an assist is counted when the pass ends up in goal, but I think in this case, the stats are misleading, IMHO.
