Sissoko interview - Daily mirror

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

MOMO SISSOKO has revealed he may never fully recover from his horrendous eye injury - and has to wear sunglasses to protect his sight.

The Liverpool midfielder feared his career might be over when he was accidentally kicked in the eye by Benfica's Beto a year ago.

Doctors were worried the Mali international might lose the sight in his right eye because of damage to his retina.

And even though Sissoko confounded them by returning to action just a month later, he admits bright sunshine hurts his eye and affects his sight and he could have to wear glasses to play like ex-Spurs man Edgar Davids.

"My eye is OK, but it's not like before," he said. "I still have a problem, particularly when there is a lot of sunshine.

"Sometimes I get pain and I can't see properly so I have to make sure I wear sunglasses when it is sunny.

"There was a moment against Manchester United when I was stood outside their penalty area waiting for the ball.

It had been kicked high up in the air and as it came down, the sun caught my eye and I couldn't see the ball properly.

"I lost sight of it for a second and ended up hitting it straight back up in the air when I had time to control it. That was a problem, but it doesn't happen too often."

Sissoko's mind flashed back to his clash with Beto before Liverpool's Champions League tie with Barcelona because the last 16 clash was one year on from his injury. He will never forget being told by a Portuguese doctor as he lay in a Lisbon hospital that his career could be over.

"On the whole, I have to be happy simply because I can play football again," said the former Valencia star.

"I feel I have come a long way from when the first doctor I saw in Portugal told me that was probably it for me and football. I say 'thank you' every day that I am able to play again.

"I did think about it ahead of the Barcelona game. It was a year on since I was injured against Benfica, but I pray all the time. I pray for the future and for every minute while it lasts.

"I suppose I am lucky. But if I think about the injury against some of the misery that exists elsewhere in the world, it doesn't really compare."

Sissoko, 22, missed three months of the campaign when he dislocated his shoulder at Birmingham in the Carling Cup and he admits he finds it difficult to be on the sidelines.

"When football is your life and you are prevented from doing it, it's difficult." he said.

well now we know why he cant control the ball, but it happens more than he seems to realise, in the words of leon you can trap a ball further than i can kick it

I like Momo but his distribution really has to improve.  10 - 15 yard passed go astray and thats not good enough.  While Momo has similar qualities to Viera, Viera technically is better, his passing is better and his ability to break up play and launch counter attacks with his runs was fantastic!!!

I really feel for momo, for that to have happened to him at his young age (even at any age) is a huge shame.  I really hope his eye does improve-I wouldnt wish it upon anyone (except maybe everton players, hehe!!!, nah only jokin!)
