The PS3 is struggling to sell in the US and even in Japan, some people on the internet have touted it to be the new Sega Dreamcast :;):

JBG's console guide.

Xbox 360:

Pros:

1. Excellent High Definition graphics and sound.
2. Xbox Live! is the best online service of all three consoles.
3. Has been out over a year so there are plenty of good games available for it now, particularly Gears of War, which is the most impressive "Next Gen" console game available.
4. It has many excellent games coming out in 2007.
5. Most old Xbox games now work with it.
6. Microsoft have signed a number of console exclusives with developers and previously Playstation exclusive titles are now coming out on the Xbox 360.
7. Excellent control pad.
8. Gamerpoints system is terrific.
9. Cheap when compared to the PS3.

Cons:
1. The machine is notoriously unreliable although breakdowns are not as common as they were.
2. Doesn't have built in wireless connectivity. You need to buy a WiFi connector.
3. While Xbox Live! is excellent, you need to pay for it.
4. Doesn't have as many older games for it as the PS3 has.
5. The Core edition is a waste of time (no hard drive) and the Premium Edition's hard drive is smaller than the PS3's.
6. No web browser as yet.
7. Doesn't come with a next gen disk player although a separate HD DVD can be bought.

Nintendo Wii

Pros:

1. The Wiimote is hugely original and will allow new types of gameplay that the 360 and PS3 cannot compete with (at least until a Wiimote style controller eventually comes out on other consoles).
2. Its the cheapest of the three consoles.
3. Nintendo always brings out highly original and addictive games. It has Zelda on it.
4. Its selling massively well world wide which means that it will have a lot of games for it over its lifetime.
5. It will have backwards compatability with previous Nintendo games through its download service. It will also have a web browser.

Cons

1. The Wiimote could yet prove to be a flash in the pan gimick.
2. It has fairly poor graphics when compared to the PS3 and 360.
3. Some of the bigger name titles which will appear on the PS3 and 360 probably won't make it over to the Wii.
4. The first generation of Wiimotes had faulty straps.

PS3.

Pros:

1. Excellent HD graphics and sound.
2. As its Sony and its a Playstation it will sell bucket loads regardless of the bad publicity and this will inevitably mean that it will have a lot of good games.
3. Sony still has some of the biggest names such as Tekken, Gran Turismo and Metal Gear Solid.
4. Although very expensive, you get a lot of stuff for your money, particularly a Blu Ray disk player.
5. Its a tried and tested forumla that has worked in the past.

Cons:

1. Even though Sony is probably correct in saying that its good value for money, its still massively expensive for a console. This will price a lot of people out of the market.
2. Including a Blu Ray player is a gamble (although its looking like Blu Ray is edging its nose out in front in the next generation disk war).
3. It doesn't include a HDMI cable in the box which has annoyed a lot of fans with HDMI compatible tvs.
4. So far its online service is a pale shadow of Xbox Live!
5. Sony has lost a lot of exclusives from the PS1 and PS2 days and there is a danger that some of its bigger names that it still has might also appear on the 360.
6. Despite all the hype, graphically, it appears that the 360 is as least as good, despite being on the market for more than a year already.
7. The release of the PS3 in Japan and American has been beset by teething problems with backwards compatability and problems with High Definition compatability with some tvs.

I agree with a lot of that mate apart from:

1. 360 hardware issues - I haven't known anyone who has had any problems, non of the people on my friends list or any of my actual mates have had any issues, their have been some probs but MS usually replace them under warrenty

2.  PS3 has big titles like Tekken, MG, and GT - The 360 has a lot of titles too like Forza (better than GT), Gears of War, Halo. Also the PS3 has lost GTA and their has been rumours Tekken might be coming too, plus Alan Wake is no long PS3 only and is being released on the 360.

3. No browser for the 360 - Browsers are always cr3p on consoles and never work, if you want the net then a PC/Mac is the only way.

I love Nintendo and play on my mate Wii but I don't think it's a amazing console, fun yeah cos it's mint for multiplayer party games and Nintendo only games like Zelda, Mario, etc.  If I was chosing a second system the Wii would be great but regards the best alround system the 360 is the one, it has great online play and all other consoles are still playing catch up, as far as the PS3's online to date it looks cr3p, you have seperate friends lists for different games which makes no sense to me, the developers say the PS3 is a lot harder to program for and that the 360 is a dream.

The PS3 lacks a feature which I could not live without to and that is streaming music, the promissed it in the PS2 and didn't live up to the promiss and they have done the same with PS3 as it is missing again.

I know what people are saying about the PS3 cos it has a lot of technology for the money but at the end of the day I want a console to play games on and the 360 beats the competitors hands down, the Saturn was ahead of it's time with online gaming and broswer back in 1997 and so was the Apple Pippin but they were also more expensive and ended up joining the list of failed consoles.

The PS3 just don't have any coming games which look that great, Motorstorm isn't a patch on the peek videos which were show before launch, GT HD looks w3nk and although the game is only about £20 you have to download the cars for an extra price, also one thing which makes me sceptical about GT HD is that Polyphony Digital delayed GT3 & 4 for about 6-9 month to perfect the online aspect but in the end they never got the online working, I think that GT HD will have online play but I don't think it will work will unlike Forza which allows you to trade your cars online, create clans, etc.

One reason why I think the 360 will win the battle is that the future of gaming is online, no one likes to complete a game then play it over and over against the computer cos lets face it you get bored where playing against mates and other humans makes the game more fun, the 360 has a fantastic friend systems and the dashboard makes things soooo simple, the Wii doesn't even have online play yet which is a pitty as Wii sports etc would be amazing against other online players and the PS3 online setup is so bad and almost an after thought.

I think the PS3 will sell but with the 360 now going for £250 new (about £200 second hand) and the Wii going for £180 I don't see the PS3 out selling them at nearly £500

Games I can't wait for this year: Bio Shock, Forza 2, PGR4, Halo 3, NBA Street Homecourt, and Assasins Creed  :buttrock

.......Mass Effect, Darkness, Half Life package, Burnout 5 and Blacksite:area51 all in addition to the above (for me).  Its going to be an expensive yet entertaining year!

the only issue i have with Live! is - the subscription fee. It should be (Gold, that is) free as standard imo.  As for the microsoft points system, why oh why can you not pay using a Debit card/Paypal etc...More accessibility = more spending Ms. :nod

good read though (JBG and Paul C)

I don't mind paying paying for Xbox Live but their should be levels of subscription, a level like the one now should be £20, a level with the same as gold but which allows say 3 XBLA games a month for free as well as themes.

The thing I don't quite understand is that when you play a game like Need for Speed for example you connect to EA's servers and they don't charge you so why do MS charge so much?

Something else which annoys me is the price to change your gamertag, it's roughly £8 which is crazy, I'm looking to change mine cos I've had 'PaulConUK' for about 3 years now and I always get booted by foreigners cos I've got UK in my name, problem is I don't know what to have, I've been thinkin about 'SickBoy78'.

Oh well I couldn't live without Live so at the end of the day it's worth £40 IMO, although it would be nice if you could pay it via DD, Paypal, etc instead  :(

Can't wait to get Forza 2 on my wireless steering wheel in May  :eyebrow

dont know if you 360 'ers have seen this article yet, it could be interesting to see it implemented across the whole network...hope it comes to fruition!

Xbox Live for free?

Monday 19-Feb-2007

Microsoft suggests PC multiplayer through Live will be free - could this have a knock-on effect on 360?

Microsoft has suggested that multiplayer gaming through Live on Windows Vista will be a free service, unlike on Xbox 360 where users have to subscribe to Gold membership to access to multiplayer.

During an interview with 1UP.com, Microsoft's Shane Kim was asked whether it'd be free for PC users to play against friends, while certain premium-level stuff would be locked behind Gold. "Theoretically speaking, that's exactly the kind of thing we'd want to do", he replied.

PC gaming's traditional 'multiplayer for free' ethic that exists with the platform is a factor being taken fully into account by Microsoft for Live on Windows.

"In the Xbox world when we created Xbox Live, there was no other option. We're sort of creating it as we go, we established that model and that framework. As we come into the Windows gaming world, there are alternatives that are out there so we have to be cognizant of that", said Kim.

"We do recognize that, unlike the Xbox 360 environment, there's existing competition in the PC online space. So we have to take that into account as we think about how we're going to structure our services, what they'll pay for and what they won't".

It's possible that Microsoft's plan for an integrated Live experience across PC and Xbox 360 could prove positive for 360 owners in regard to paid-for content. If multiplayer gaming's provided free through Windows Live, then the company may just see fit to offer the same to Xbox 360 fans.
