Feyenoord excluded from UEFA Cup

Friday, 19 January 2007

The UEFA Appeals Body has excluded Dutch club Feyenoord from the 2006/07 UEFA Cup following crowd disturbances by its fans at the UEFA Cup group-stage match against AS Nancy-Lorraine in France on 30 November last year.

Tougher sanction

UEFA announced on Friday that the Appeals Body had toughened its sanction against the Rotterdam team, by excluding Feyenoord from all of this season's UEFA competitions - including the current UEFA Cup, in which Feyenoord had progressed from the group stage to face England's Tottenham Hotspur FC in the Round of 32. The initial fine of CHF 200,000 (€123,615) was reduced to CHF 100,000 (€61,810).

UEFA appeal

The decision follows an appeal made by UEFA in accordance with Article 50 of the UEFA Disciplinary Regulations, whereby "the parties directly concerned and UEFA have the power to appeal", after an initial decision by the body of first instance, the UEFA Control and Disciplinary Body, on 7 December last year. The first decision comprised a fine of CHF 200,000 and a suspended sentence of two matches behind closed doors, on probation for three years.

Feyenoord appeal rejected
The appeal by Feyenoord against the original punishment handed down by the UEFA Control and Disciplinary Body was rejected. Feyenoord were also ordered to contact Nancy regarding settlement of the damages.

I hope Spurs win the UEFA Cup.

They need to shift the competition to a straight two-leg knockout format.

The group stage phase is a waste of time.

Tottenham given Uefa Cup bye

By Mark Buckingham -  25 Jan 2007

Tottenham Hotspur have been given a bye through to the Uefa Cup round of 16, following the expulsion of Feyenoord.

The Dutch club had originally been kicked out of the competition last week in relation to an incident which occurred in their group game at Nancy in late November.

Crowd violence marred the match and Feyenoord were originally fined and given a suspended sentence to play two games in an empty stadium.

Uefa deemed that punishment to be insufficient and met to throw Spurs' last 32 opponents out of the tournament.

Spurs will now automatically go through to the next stage of the Uefa Cup, with European football's governing body confirming the decision.

"Tottenham Hotspur FC have received a bye into the Uefa Cup Round of 16 following the exclusion of opponents Feyenoord from the competition," read a statement from Uefa.

"The English Premiership club were notified today by Uefa that they have been awarded automatic qualification for the tournament's Round of 16, where they will face the winners of the Round of 32 tie between SC Braga and Parma FC.

"Uefa made its decision in accordance with paragraph 32.01 of the tournament regulations.

"Uefa's Appeals Body decided to exclude Feyenoord from the Uefa Cup on 19 January following crowd disturbances by fans of the Dutch side at the group stage match against AS Nancy-Lorraine in France on 30 November.

"The decision taken by Uefa is subject to a possible appeal by Feyenoord to the Court of Arbitration of Sport."

Bit of a joke really, didnt see them kicking Real Madrid or that other Spanish club out when they were doing monkey noises and being racist, which is far worse and more prelevant in the game today.
