Moneybags Chelsea have admitted they would be interested in England stars Steven Gerrard and Wayne Rooney if they were given any indication that they were available.
Rooney has lit up Euro 2004, scoring four goals and producing stunning all-round play, and the Everton teenager has inevitably been linked with the big guns.
Gerrard has yet to hit top form, but The Blues clearly feel he has the capabilities to forge a successful partnership with his England cohort Frank Lampard at Stamford Bridge.
With a move for Porto playmaker Deco in doubt, it is being suggested Chelsea are ready to turn to Liverpool star Gerrard to strengthen their midfield.
Blues chief executive Peter Kenyon has hailed the scouse duo, saying they would enter the market if their clubs decide to sell.
"These two guys are very hot," Kenyon told Chelsea TV. "Gerrard is recognised, along with Frank Lampard, as one of the best midfielders in the country.
"If it were to be possible, then we would be genuinely interested.
"It has been interesting to see how well he (Gerrard) has played with Frank Lampard.
"It is speculation at this stage, but if he was to become available we would be interested in Gerrard.
"Rooney is the talk of the tournament. Incredible really, particularly coming on the back of what has been an average season.
"He is not frightened by anything and embraces the big occasion."
