Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Postby A.B. » Fri Jan 12, 2007 6:05 pm

Well not really but keep reading:

Rafael Benitez has insisted he and the club's board are working together to ensure a bright and successful future at Anfield.
The Reds' boss is disappointed with the media coverage which followed his side's Carling Cup defeat to Arsenal, and frustrated with suggestions there are problems between himself and the board.

Benitez has backed up his thoughts by launching a defence of his managerial record so far and he insists he has the faith and trust of everyone at the club to bring more trophies back to Anfield.

"I'm really disappointed in the way things have been presented and misinterpreted since yesterday morning," he said.

"I have no problem with my board. This club is going in the right direction, and I was brought here to improve our situation.

"We have done this in two years by winning big trophies, winning more Premiership points than we've had for 17 years and bringing in players whose value has doubled.

"Three years ago we had players like Diouf and Cheyrou who we couldn't sell. Look at the value of their replacements compared to the price we paid for them.

"The board brought me to win the Premiership, not to get to the semi-final of the Carling Cup. My relationship with them is fantastic and they have been doing their best for a long time to help bring more success. Rick Parry and the Chairman want the best for Liverpool, as we all do.

"That's why they are talking to new investors and that's why they brought me here. Why are they doing this? To help build a new stadium and to buy top class players in the future.

"Liverpool have been 17 years without winning the Premiership, so tell me what's our main priority?" he added. "Nobody wants to lose.

"It's disappointing we lost, and more disappointing how we lost, but we have to look at our squad and set priorities. We have shown how much we are progressing and people who analyse the whole situation understand.

"The future of Liverpool is not the semi-final of the Carling Cup, it is challenging for the Premiership and Champions League. The Carling Cup is always a good option, but it is not the biggest priority.

"People talked about the team selection because they have no understanding of the whole situation. We need to finish in the top four to qualify for the Champions League and buy more top players. We have Manchester United, Chelsea and Barcelona to come here soon. Those games are more important.

"We will make mistakes, but when you look at the bigger picture you can see how much progress has been made."

I know it won't shut the press up, but it fucking should.

I never believed this story in the first place, the way board's are in spanish football he's got nothing to whinge about over here.

"Three years ago we had players like Diouf and Cheyrou who we couldn't sell"

  Love that bit

I don't always agree with Rafa but good to see him come out and state exactly what his priorities are , i.e. loosely translated "F'uck yer Carling Cup it's the Premiership and Champions League titles we're after "

Wish he'd told us this before, I wouldn't have even bothered watching the match then. In all seriousness I don't agree with that way of thinking but if he has the board and the fans behind him in not caring about the Coca Cola Cup then who am I to complain, bring on Barcelona!!

Quality words from Rafa! Im definately saving this interview so if ever in the future the media starts spouting some shi.t again about Rafa wanting to leave I can reassure myself by looking at this, because even I have some doubts occassionally.

I love the spin the media comes up with.   Even this article has been spun in interesting ways.  Football365.com, for instance, has it copied under a link that reads "Benitez admits he's under-performed in the Premiership", which is one rather twisted way of interpreting Rafa's assertion that the Premiership is more important than the Carling Cup! :D

Good words by Raffa...and great to see him fight back when the press are on his back!
Does not really say anything that any fan with half a brain would have known anyway, but good that he has said it!

Maybe the doubters can take it on board and do what fans are meant to do through the bad times as much as the good!'SUPPORT' the manager and players!

All very well and good but reading :-

"The future of Liverpool is not the semi-final of the Carling Cup, it is challenging for the Premiership and Champions League. The Carling Cup is always a good option, but it is not the biggest priority."

Champions League resumes next month and is a tough prospect, we ain't exactly in pole position for the Premiership and finishing 3rd or 4th is the main aim. So in my view playing Carra and Reina alone would have been worth it, spudz in the semi-final and a possible final. No matter how you dress it up Rafa made a mistake, we're playing a team bottom of the Premiership with one win all season on Saturday, I'm sure he'll rest players then anyway. But anyone calling for his head is an idiot given what he has already done at Anfield

Rafa's season last year

It was the 3rd highest points per game achieved by a Liverpool team in a season in the top flight. That is of course allowing 3 points for a win where only 2 were actually awarded

1978/9 2.33 points/game (Champions)
1987/8 2.25 points/game (Champions)
2005/6 2.16 points/game (3rd Place)

It was also the 5th best defence in Liverpool top flight history

1978/9 0.38 goals/game
1968/9 0.57 goals/game
1970/1 0.57 goals/game
1987/8 0.60 goals/game
2005/6 0.66 goals/game

And his points per game is fourth in the all time Liverpool managers' records :-

Kenny Dalglish 2.07 pts/game
Bob Paisley 1.94 pts/game
Joe Fagan 1.87 pts/game
Rafa Benitez 1.84 pt/s game

Compared to what has passed before he is a miracle (Roy Evans 1.72, Gerard Houllier 1.73, Graeme Souness 1.52) But for teams worth £100m each above us I reckon he'd be adding the title to his silverware.

Points to win the league (38 games)

38 game seasons : 24
Average points of Champions : 79
Most points of Champions : 95 (Chelsea 2004/5, courtesy of R.Abramovich)

Number of times 82 points would have been Champions : 17/24 (70.83%)

In the 24 seasons of top flight football with 38 games only NINE teams have managed more than 82 points in a season (awarding 3 points for a win even if only 2 were actually recorded) and that includes the dominant mancs who despite their achievements don't appear as often as you'd expect

Most points in a 38 game season*

1. 95 Chelsea (2004/05)
2. 91 Man Utd (1999/00)
3. 91 Chelsea (2005/06)
4. 90 Arsenal (2004/05)
5. 87 Arsenal (2001/02)
6. 85 Arsenal (1990/91)
7. 83 Arsenal (2004/05) - Runners-up
8. 83 Man Utd (2002/03)
9. 83 Man Utd (2005/06) - Runners-up
10. 82 Man Utd (1995/96)
11. 82 LIVERPOOL (2005/06) - 3rd
12. 80 Man Utd (2000/01)
13. 80 LIVERPOOL (2001/02) - 2nd

*Where teams have the same number of points, goal difference was used to decide the order. All seasons converted to 3 points for a win

if the premier league is so important then why did rafa persist with his strange team selections when it was obvious it wasnt working at the start of the season, and since when has finishing 4th in the league been better than winning a trophy. a league cup win would have brought some revenue into the club as well.

sorry guys but i dont buy into what he says, we were out the race for the league 2 months ago because of rafa, now we are also out the carling cup because of rafa.

rafa needs to sort his act out pretty quick

BUT fella never put a man down when he is still in the fight....just ask Rocky!

Barca are by no means above us..in fact i know we will beat them!
How much of an act will Raffa need to sort when he wins 2 C/L finals in 3 seasons?
As it stands Raffa needs to prove nothing..Oh im not starting..im on a promise!
