Beckam for liverpool ? - Right side of midfield solution

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Postby woof woof ! » Fri Jun 04, 2004 8:40 am

I think many people are allowing their instinctive dislike of Beckham to overule their judgement of him as a player. He is not the perfect package . Defensively he doesn't tackle the the way Stevie does however he does close people down harrying and running for 90 mins. His ability to cross a ball is second to none and if there is a better free kick expert in the premiership I have yet to see them.
As for Beckham playing for us ? Forget it, would never happen.

Woof woof, I would expect ay player worth his salt to close down and harry people... comes with the job discription of being a professional footballer... I'm not saying Beckham isn't a top quality right winger but he is certainly not World Class... thats just the media hype, as I sdaid before if he had a face like Luke Chadwick and a wife like Lisa Reilly he mightn't even be playing international football. Look at Alan Thompson for Celtic.... he may not be the best footballer in the world but he can do all of the above you listed for Becks, namely close people down and harry for 90 mins, he can put in damn good crosses and he can take a free kick when he has to... yet he doesn't court the celebrity like Becks and isn't even considered. I know he's playing in a weak league but he must be a better optio on the left wing than Stevie who would be far more useful in the centre

Bottom line is sunshine,if Beckham had been born a Red you would be telling me and the world how brilliant he is.I'm not a major fan of Beckham but I do give credit where it's due.
As for expecting any player worth his salt to close down and run for 90 mins, perhaps you could tell that to some of our players. Yeah it is something we should expect but not necessarily what we get. :(

Yeah credit where its due, he's a top class right winger but isn't world class, and the baggage he brings to a team for what you get is not worth it.

He is a an excellent free kick taker and a great crosser. He has been playing in the centre for Madrid and shown to lack the skills to be world class. To call him a world class player is ridiculous, he is a world class crosser.

The rest is media ******, dying to have a new royal couple since the last one went bust. The media need a darling couple to sell papers and magazines.

As a player, good player, great crosser.

Beckham has superb technique but has become inconsistent both for club and country over the second half of the season.

I think around 99-2000 Beckham was potentially a world class player, and managed to show that potential for more than a season, constantly on the wing putting in swirling accurate crosses that even good defences struggled to deal with.

I remember around 2001 when his form started to waiver - good opposition left backs kept shutting him out and due to his lack of pace or dribbling ability he couldnt do much - pundits were saying that like all great players hed learn to deal with it and become stronger.

I think this is just a trend with many of the current English "stars" who show potential, get hyped up, start believing that hype, and then thinking they are world class or greats never take that step forward to realise that potential.

Beckham needs to win the spanish league and european cup and also lead england to glory if he wants to be remembered as a "great" or by any means world class.

Beckham isn't world class yet.
He is just beginning to become better as a player until his recent media exposure.
He is a good crosser of the ball, period! But he was never near world class.
I hope he becomes a better all round player during his time in Real.
England will benefit from his improvement.

Best passer in the game
Best free-kick taker in the game
Best crosser in the game
One of the best corner taker's in the game
Works hard, can tackle, keeps it simple, rarely gives the ball away, gets a few goals.

What does a player have to do to be considered world-class? run really fast and do lots of tricks?

Imo Beckham is a great player and People have been saying he will be overvalued but how much revenue would we get back ie shirt sales ,sponsership etc ,i think we would get most back over 2 or 3 years.

But he would never sign for us coz we are not a top club anymore   :(

I saw on Football focus kids in Lativa talking about their favourite english player, they said Beckham. they've probably never seen him play but buy into all the glamour ******.

DaCourt said Scholes was the best and Viera said either Scholes or Gerrard.

People who really know football know that Beckham is a good player but very limited.

Girls and housewives think Beckham is good because they see him in OK magazine.

Beckham was voted in as the best Right Midfielder England has ever seen. This was voted by the whole country and football experts. Can they all be wrong?
