Forgive me if I'm wrong here, but did Israel not go into Lebanon in 1982 because of attacks by the PLO, Fatah and the Syrians?

Have a look at the history, and then tell me Israel wasn't justified. People are too eager to believe the PR spin woven by the "terrorists".

I'm not Israeli, nor have I any Israeli friends/relatives - I just can step back and see it from a neutral.

If you are in any doubt as to why Israel invaded Lebanon in 1982, check the facts:

Nahariya/Avivim School Bus Attack, 1970

Lod Airport Massacre, 1972

Munich Olympics Massacre, 1972

Yom Kippur War, 1973

Kiryat Shmona (or Quirat Shemona), 1974

Ma'alot (or Maalot), 1974

Tel Aviv Savoy Hotel, 1975

Bus Hijacking on Coastal Road, 1978

Ambassador Shlomo Argov Assassination attempt, 1982

Also during that period all Arab states with the exception of Egypt maintained an official state of war with Israel.

Israel has had to deal with terrorists who have been sponsered by Arab countries surrounding them, and some that don't!

Metalhead - I draw your attention to what I said before about the reasons Israel invaded in 82.

I also would say, that there are factions within the Arab/Muslim world who will not be happy until Israel doesn't exist. I draw your attention to Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and Ruhollah Khomeini remarks about wiping Israel of the face of the earth.

Many people think that Israel should not exist (not in the middle east anyway), it doesn't make them muslim terrorists.

I mean, East Germany,West Germany, USSR, Yugoslavia have all been wiped of the map in the last few years.

The media spun it to sound like the Iranian leader meant that every jew should be killed, he may (and I wasn't there personally, so I don't know) have meant that the state should be done away with and Palestine returned.

Even if you disagree with that it is not an extreme view.

Yes they have, but in some cases by popular consent - other by civil war, breakup Soviet Union, etc. I can't see too many Israelis rising up to overthrow their government, so that they can be intrigated into a Palestinian state.

No seriously Metalhead , I wish you well but this paranoia about Israel coupled with a desire throughout the mid east to "wipe them from the map" is as much a part of the problem as any action Israel may take in what they see as a defense of themselves .

I say again this is not a defense of Israels activities but they have a nuclear capability and they will never capitulate to a a nation or religion that calls for their extermination . you guys in the mid east need a reality check .

yes its true that one of the reasons, ONE of the reasons to invade Lebanon in the 82 was because of the PLO in Lebanon, but coupled with this reason came a destruction of beirut and the south (1978 when israeli forces invaded the south). If you look at it in an arab point of view, Israel had other important reasons to invade lebanon. The Litani river was very important source of water that was really tempting for the israelies.

Woof, you my friend need a reality check, stop watching CNN and see the truth :laugh:

the FACT is Israel aren't destroying hizb allah, they are destroying Lebanon, they are taking us 100 years back! They are killing innocent civilians, right now they are targeting ambulances, buses and trucks.

ok bush just admited in a press conference that he is giving bombs and explosives to Israel to carry on their mission against Hizballah, and he just said that this has been planned before the war started. Its in Al-Hurra channel, Bush and Mr.Maliki in a press conference.

Hizballah SOLDIERS killed/captured 8 Israeli SOLDIERS - If Israel had got some soldiers to go to that same area and kill a similar number of Hizballah soldiers, I'd say fair enough.

Israel targeted CIVILIANS and in the last few weeks and have killed 10 times as many lebenonese CIVILIANS as vice-versa.

Israel have used this situation to carry out their own land grab. The US should stop all funding to Israel and let them support themselves, then see how tough they are.

They won't though because of the Jewish vote in the States. Many, many Jewish people in the States are very prosperous and thus have a lot of power in their communities.

Greedy politicians are willing to risk the lives of their citizens to gain votes. That may sound harsh, but the Israeli occupation of what Islamic countries believe are their lands is by far the strongest issue amongst the Middle East people, and the more the US support Israel, the more it will inflame hatred amongst the Islamic community.

Unfortunately it gives terrorist groups like Al-Qaeda more excuses to attack America, and more support to their cause in the Middle-East.

I think people have very short-term memories. i can remember the suicide bombers of the second Intifada The indiscriminate murder of innocent people by Hamas, the boatloads of smuggled weapons from Iran and the Qassam rockets attacks on Israeli communities.

What do you expect Israel to do when a terrorist walks into a nightclub and detonates a bomb killing innocent people. But then again, they'd say that they were Israeli civilians and were legitimate targets!

Do you not remember the lynching of 2 Israeli reservists in Ramallah? That must have made every Palestinian proud of themselves.

I admit that the Israeli response to terrorist attacks is sometimes heavy handed. But then again, the Palestinian terrorists, militia, whatever you want to call them, are no angels. I think the Arab/Palestinian ordinary people seriously have to look at themselves also. This is not a one sided conflict - it is not just Israel's fault. The Palestinians need to see that they are being used by the Iranians/Syrians to attack Israel and destabilize the Middle-east. They also need to realize that terrorism is not going to solve a political problem.
