A full kop and no game - A cold day for football

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Sitting in the cosiness of the modern day KOP I could only smile when I recalled one day in 1965. We were playing Cologne in the European Cup Quarter Final. The ground was full, which in those days was over 50,000(probably more if LFC were honest). The KOP was heaving and the weather turned really bad, with snow coming down in bucketloads. The upshot was that the ref decided to call the game off with the ground full and not a ball being kicked. I had to struggle out the KOP with the other 25000 supporters and collect a ticket for the re-arranged game. The steep bank of steps at the back of the KOP were like a mountain that night. The crush was that bad I took one step off the top and I swear my feet never touched the ground until we made it down to the bottom (about a hundred steps below)such was the crush.
It took me about two hours to get out of the ground and two hours to walk home because all the buses had stopped running due to the snow. We eventually played the game which was a draw and a third game was needed to decide the tie. That was a draw also and we finally went through on the toss of a coin, to meet Inter Milan in the Semi Final - and that was one game I'll never forget. I'll tell you about that one some other time........memories eh!

Great post.It stirs memories of extremes a football fan would go through just to see their beloved team.
I always arrived at Anfield between 10 and 10.30,so I would be first through the gate and upto my spec before anybody else pinched it.The gates never opened till 1.00 so it was a long wait, yet there was always a good turn-out well before opening time. The main hardship know is the cost.I was reading a copy of the Daily Mirror from 26/5/77,thats the day after the glorious night in Rome, and in it was an article about the league chairmen debating wether they should increase the gate price from 65p upto 80p.The newspaper cost 7p and I think you could buy 4 pints for £1.00.If ever proof was needed that the beautiful game has been stolen from the youngsters and "Joe public" those cost differentials say it all.I'm fortunate I can pay myself well but a lot of supporters can't afford the expense every week.
There's me going off on a tangent once again....keep the memories flowing,it keeps me young.
THERE'S A GREAT BIG BEAUTIFUL TOMORROW SHINING AT THE END OF EVERY DAY.
THERE'S A GREAT BIG BEAUTIFUL TOMORROW AND TOMORROW IS JUST A DREAM AWAY.

Thanks Supersub, I know from reading your posts that you have the same passion and great memories that I have about our club. The Kop was like my second home when I was growing up. If the first team wasn't at home I would watch the reserves, A and B teams, City schoolboy teams etc etc. I knew every inch of the old Kop and the old 'Boys Pen'. In fact I remember my dad actually lifting me up in the early years and carrying me through the turnstlile, because in those days if you were carrying a kid then you only paid half price for the youngster. The fact that I was nearly the same size as my dad and heavier than him didn't seem to matter...because he saved a few bob - but he put me down very quickly once we were through.
There seemed to a lot more fun going on in the KOP those days.
