I think Gerrard's dive was stupid. What is the point in diving in a friendly? all it does it highlight the fact that you are a diver and that means if he goes down under an iffy challenge in a world cup game, the referee might remember that gerrard is a diver and will now never get a penalty - like Drogba/Ginola etc

Thats a fair point, there is no need for it and if he gets a reputation it will stick.
I watched part of the England B game against Belarus last week, Joe Cole came on for about 10 minutes near the end and dived twice.
It will not help Englands cause if they are percieved as divers.

But don't you think that Ian Wright had a point when he said that teams do it against us so why not.
Mind you I hate divers as it annoys the hell out of me.

Lets face it when the oppositions dives its the world worst thing and is unforgivable and when its one of the guys on our side, we will find a million reasons to justifiy it
Its not right but it really needs strong action from governing body and the refs to stamp it out

And there in lies the problem I think.
I can't for the life of me remember when I last saw a player get booked for diving?
Even worse a few games ago I found myself agreeing with Motty when he said it should be a straight red for diving and after Lawro said but that means it'd end up 9 against 8 Motty pointed out that if they did it at the start of the season then players would get out of the habit pretty quickley.

I do to an extent because there are times when it goes against you, diving will never be stamped out so if someone dives and its in my teams favour i suppose i wouldnt be too bothered.
The point big Niall made about it being a meaningless friendly though is right, and in the B international the ref twice told Joe Cole to get back on his feet, once reputations have been damaged they cannot be mended, and there may be genuine fouls that they dont get penalties for if they are not careful.
Does anyone remember Ortega against Holland in 98 ? Taken out in the area, and then Van Der Sar over reacted when he jumped up at him, not only didnt he get the penalty he was then sent off...i was made up at the time, but dont want England/Liverpool players to be labelled divers.

Agreed.
if you look at Joe cole for example, everytime I watch him play either for Chelsea or England I find myself automatically thinking dive whenever he get's fouled.
As for Gerrard I have to admit to feeling slightly dissapointed when the reply showed it to be a dive as you just don't expect it of him.

yeah, shame though.

This used to be Owen's forte (when he used to play for us).

Let's hope Stevie doesn't make a habit of it and quite frankly

I can't really see that happening.

I hope that Gerrard stops this diving, I don't want us to be branded the new Chelsea or Argentina.

Yeah true, what annoys me about Gerrard diving is the small fact that he has come out and condemned cheating in any shape or form, yet he's diving around. I know it's been part of the footballing parcel for years and it's always been there, always will, I just thought Gerrard was much better than that, that's all.

I'm surprised Rafa hasn't given Gerrard some harsh but needed words over his diving, if he has they obviously haven't worked.

I know diving will always be there but I suppose I'm being rather stupid to want Liverpool players to play fairly and not dive like Kromkamp and Gerrard.

Does anyone else notice that out of drogba etc gerrard is the only one to have MOTD say that he dived. When they talk about the likes of drogba they say that he goes down a little easy but they said gerrard dived.

I mean yes he did dive and I condem it. We cannot compare stevie to drogba because drogba goes down when there is no one within 5 yards of him and then complains when something is not given.

I'm surprised MOTD didn't comment on Gary Linekar against Cameroon in a world cup "going down a bit easy." to get 2 penalties  :glare:
