Robbie is getting himself sorted off the pitch, and is making a huge contribution on it. In front of reporters, he's stating his desire to say in no uncertain terms, but at the same time he's making no threats, no demands and is placing no pressure on the boss. Spot on attitude - he knows that Rafa's done him a favour.

Rafa, on the other hand, IS putting pressure on Robbie, forcing him to make his case on the pitch and in training. He's biding his time, and all the while this is making Robbie hungrier and hungrier, and it shows in the way he's putting himself about on the pitch. Meanwhile Rafa can sit back and assess his options, and although everything's guesswork at this stage, we've all been watching the same matches, and at worst I'd say Robbie has been our second best striker since his arrival. I'd actually argue he's been the pick of our strikers in that time.

I don't think it's passed Rafa by that decisions haven't exactly gone Robbie's way, and if he had 5 goals to his name from 6 starts, it'd be hard for Rafa to keep him waiting for a deal. As it stands, he's got 2 goals to his name, and so I think Benitez is right to make him no promises at this stage.

Behind it all though, I think Robbie knows that he's acquitted himself well, and I think Rafa knows that the evidence on the pitch and the maths for the purposes of the balance sheet all point to a no-brainer. This is a guy that, before January, would have been happy to play 25 minutes every other game for free. I and others believe he's better than that, but just knowing that you have a quality player on your books with that sort of desire to play for a club, is going to do a job for you, and isn't going to break the bank...it's just a fantastic situation, for everyone concerned with the club.

If we're going to get rid of strikers come summer, a young French international with 15 goals to his name this year, and a Spanish international that should in theory have at least that many to his name both have decent resale value. I don't know their salaries, but I'm guessing we're talking at least £35k.

If Rafa doesn't offer him a new contract, Robbie Fowler will be a free agent, and removing him from our books will gain us no money to bring in new players.

My guess is that a new contract will be on the table in the next fortnight. I just can't imagine any reason at this point for Rafa to pass on him.

Good post, mate!

As others have noted, Robbie is also as valuable in the locker room as he is on the pitch--if nothing else he can continue to remind his teammates what it means to pull on the shirt and give their all for the club.

I also suspect that Rafa rates Robbie's intelligence as highly as his finishing.  Robbie's the kind of player that he can throw on late in a pivotal, tense game and be assured that he'll do what needs to be done--hold up the ball, run down the clock, track back, put a foot in, etc.

Moreover, Robbie's intelligence makes him adaptable--something that Benitez surely values given his propensity to change tactics from game to game or, on occasion, from half to half! :D

I've no doubt that the Gaffer recognizes Robbie's contributions to date and will offer him at least a one-year contract, regardless of how many other forwards he's trying to sign.

Yeah, agreed.  There's nothing to lose and Robbie Fowler has already proven he is worth a one year extension.  He's a cut above Morientes IMO and if we do go on to sign a young striker in the summer who better to learn from???

NANDO: I HOPE ROBBIE GETS NEW DEAL
Paul Eaton 05 April 2006

Fernando Morientes has today spoken of his desire to see Robbie Fowler given a new Liverpool contract at the end of the season.

Fowler is still waiting to discover if the Reds will offer him a new deal once his six month agreement expires after the final game of the campaign.

The Liverpool striker netted his second goal since his return to the club against West Brom at the weekend and Morientes believes he has shown more than enough over the last couple of months to warrant a new deal.

"I'm very aware of what Robbie has achieved in the past and I know from watching him work, train and play what he can achieve in the future. It's very important that he gets a new contract," Morientes told Liverpoolfc.tv.

"I spent my younger years being very aware of football and watching it all the time on the television, but even if you don't watch the game then I'm sure you'd still know who Robbie Fowler is. He's a real idol to the fans here and I think he's partly responsible for people going to the game almost with an extra spring in their step because they know they can expect something special from him.

"He's a top international goalscorer for England, he's been a top goalscorer for Liverpool and his career statistics speak for themselves. I hope he gets a new offer from the club because he's still a top player."

Well i have to admit i had doubts if Robbie's return was going to be successful and he probably has some way to go but maybe he's done enough now. His age and fitness were the biggest worry for me but there's no substitute for class. As big Sam so bitterly pointed out his strike wasnt the sweetest but it was enough to beat any keeper and just summed up his ability to find the net.

Absolute no brainer for me.

Bar Robbie f#cking up in the next 2 weeks he will be staying with Crouch and maybe Pongolle.

Still a class act. If he can work on his fitness and get a full pre-season under his belt, he could be like a new player next season.

We should keep him until he retires. With his experience, he would be very useful as an example for a new generation of liverpool strikers. A great goalscorer and anfield legend....By the way, great goal against bolton.... :D

Dunno about that Judge

By my reckoning Traore has survived about 3 summer clearouts, he seems to have a charmed life  :)

Cisse definately looks to be a on the way out but im still not convinced we have the finances to sell both him and Nando and also find players to replace them. Last off season there seem to be plenty of frustration trying to get a quality transfer

Certainly hope Robbie gets a contract extension, he already proved himself and the cost involved is well worth it

well wed better sort something out, even fat sam has admitted he would be tempted to sign him:

Bolton Wanderers boss Sam Allardyce says he would consider a move for Liverpool striker Robbie Fowler, if The Reds decide not to keep him on this summer.

The former Leeds United hit-man did his efforts for a new Anfield contract a power of good with Liverpool's winning goal in their 1-0 win over The Trotters on Sunday.

It was Fowler's third goal for Rafa Benitez's men since his shock return to the club from Manchester City during the January transfer window.

The 31-year-old is under contract until the end of the current season, with Benitez stating the goalscorer's Reds future will be decided next month.

Allardyce admits he would fancy bringing Fowler to The Reebok Stadium next season and stated his admiration for Liverpool's stingy backline.

"You'd always think about a goalscorer like him, but it would depend on the big numbers," Allardyce said. "If he keeps on scoring for Liverpool, they'll want to keep him. "One of their problems has been scoring, but their defence is the ultimate and what we're trying to achieve."

Walrus head can kiss my big fat @rse no chance of him getting Robbie, had an idea he wanted him by his quotes after the game, when he said  they will probably keep him now.

If I am not mistaken, Traore was given a contract extension only last summer.

My heart skipped  a few beats when I saw him coming on against Bolton. Thank God he was playing on wide left midfield and not in defense.

As far as Fowler is concerned, yes, we should give him a new contract.

He may not be quicksilver and may have been struggling to achieve optimum fitness but he has a quicksilver brain and his link-up play is first class. He has also developed his alround game and has lost none of his opportunism for goals.
