In Northern Ireland we dont pay council tax. We pay rates. Are they the same thing?

I don't think anybody can argue about raising the retirement age (although, maybe the years you've worked should be a better barometer, e.g. I didn't start work until 23 so I'd have no problem with somebody who started at 16 retiring before me).

However, in Ireland, we are getting FuKKed the same way as you in UK. IN Ireland, Soldiers get to retire after 20 years on a decent pension, they are under 40. Now I wouldn't mind if they were out fighting wars to keep my freedom but Ireland has never had a war - we're neutral so why the F*** are these guys treated so well.

All civil service get great pensions, my uncle was a teacher and he recently retired before 65, goes on great holidays a few times a year - private sector are supposed to work until you drop.

spot on niall :nod

not sure about the army bit though, they obviusly can't go on til 65 even if they are sitting about being neutral  :D

i'm a financial adviser so could tell everybody on here til the cows come home about how the government rapes our @rses on tax, it's absolutely UNBELIEVABLE how many little things you get taxed on even though you're buying them with your own money which has already been taxed before you even see it   makes my feckin blood boil it does

i wouldn't mind the fact that taxes have been increasing every year for the last 9 years if we had a health service & education system to show for it but thery're more of a feckin shambles than they were when i was a kid in the 70's

rant over, i need some booze  :D

similar, rates go off the value of your house (worked out back in the 70's sometime) like england used to be until council tax came in - still goes off the size of your house but just gave them an excuse to move the goalposts and rob us blind :(

the tories tried to bring in poll tax which meant each person had to pay something rather than it all being about the size of your house (so one person living in a huge house didn't have to pay a fortune compared to six people living in a smaller house) but that was obviously a bit politically unpalatable to a lot of rioting students & soap-dodgers so never went through

Who gives a sh!t, i just liked the idea of a day off, with the amount of booze i drink and the way i am enjoying life at the moment i have no intention of getting past the 65 mark so i probably wont be able to see any of it any way.

1/3 of my salary goes in to paying taxes, NI and my pension contribution, I signed-up to the LGPS on the basis of a final salary pension, and my contributions have increased in line with climbing the 'so-called' career Ladder, If I'm on £60,000 pa, my final stake in the pensions sheme should reflect that .. gawd knows they take enuff to fill the coffers at the mo.. My Council tax goes through my salary too ..
