Looking at the current squad on a position by postion basis we seem to be ok.

By all accounts, to what I understand, is that Riise wanted to get back into his role of left wing, especially since Kewell had his shocking run of injuries. Then Zenden came in to put some pressure on that position, and ever since Zenden's injury, Riise hadn't had any competition, and naturally, Traore was preferred to Warnock to be put in as Left Full Back seeing as there was no one else to occupy the left wing position. Riise then had to come back to his role as left wing full back to allow Kewell to slip in to his preferred left wing position, to bring strength into Liverpool's game.

I much prefer the Riise-Kewell combo down the flank anyway, both have become great players for us in recent weeks.

I doubt we will be seeing any big name signings under Rafa's tenure. Very good established players, or young hungry ones. Very few clubs make 15 million plus signings. 10 million even. I doubt that Rafa and LFC will ever be involved in signing one of world football's "hottest properties" in the immediate future...

The signing of Xabi was big money, yes. But, not an extreme amount. This is what I am saying. And, although Real and the Mancs were interested they never stepped up their interest and made it serious from the beginning. Real toyed with the idea of signing him for a bit too long, and I don't remember what happened with the Mancs. Either club could easily outbid us, though. They are probably kicking themselves now. Puddy mentioned Adriano. One of the best and most recognized strikers in the world. Household name. He would easily cost any club wanting to buy him in excess of 25 million, IMO. That's unrealistic. Xabi Alonso wasn't a household name when we signed him. Most Liverpool supporters hadn't heard of him before, let's be honest. Only people who watched La Liga knew much of him. Gerrard, Henry, Adriano, etc. Everyone knows of them. This was my point, I don't think we will ever buy these types of players flat out. They cost insane money. This is why I said "very-good experienced (doesn't mean old) players" are our realistic targets instead of highest of profile ones. I'm not even going to comment of Cisse as his tranfer cost is a joke..

Sort of. They wanted Xabi, and they wanted him cheap as they knew we needed the money. The typical pressure of Marca and the capital media started. Since there was not that much money in Spanish football, only Madrid and Bar$a might seem able to enter the bids, and Bar$a never entered. I just think they didn't expect the Liverpool movement. Thanks for the added insight. I remember reading an article or something on here from a Real Sociedad's fan point of view regarding Alonso's transfer, and the person expressed their happiness about him not ending up at Real Madrid. I don't know if you were the one who wrote it and it was a post, or if it was an article posted on here. You never ran into Xabi days or weeks prior to him signing with Liverpool at a cafe early in the morning, did you?? And him telling you "Don't worry. I won't sign for Madrid." and smiling when asked about his future?? I remember that part well.

I don't think we need anymore signings to strengthen the squad, i would say the squad is now balanced. Any future signings needed would be to provide cover of equal or near equal ability.

This is the strength that Chelski have over ourselves. Their bench is far stronger than ours. We needed satisfactory cover.

I think we still need a top class striker, a striker whos going to get 20+ a season. Between them IMO, i dont think cisse morientes and crouch are gonna do it , ad we should offload one to get something decent.

Ok crouch works hard, but his job is to score goals, he's not exactly prolific. cisse and moro too.

whats worrying for me is, most of our goals still come from the midfield.

Crouch is a very important player for us. With the system Rafa employs, Crouch is pivotal to it's success.

I agree we need a prolific striker, preferably someone with some pace so we can exploit more weaknesses in defences.

You see it in that perspective but a manager like Benitez doesn't. While he was at Valencia most of Valencia's goals came from midfield. Mista,a striker,did score 20 goals in one season but that was just in one season out of the three that Benitez spent there.

Rafa wants the midfield to score goals, more so than the strikers. Now why would he want that? When the goals are being scored from all over midfield then the team is not depending on one or two players i.e. strikers. Benitez has emphasized countless times how much he wants the likes of Gerrard,Riise,Garcia,etc.. to score.

It makes perfect sense when you think about it. A team is scoring goals without fully depending on the strikers. Let's use Newcastle as an example. When Owen plays the majority of the goals come from him. When he doesn't play, Newcastle never look like they're going to score.

And when the opposition is comming up with their gameplan they are thinking about the strikers probably instantly. You mark out one prolific striker and you stop the team from scoring most of the time. But when you have various players who can score goals then its more difficult to mark them no?

Benitez has said that himself if you don't believe me. He even pointed out recently what he did against us when Valencia played us at Anfield. He was asked if he wanted Valencia to mark Gerrard out of the game and he said no.

Instead he said that Owen was the main threat and that stopping him from getting into good positions would prevent us from scoring. He was spot on.

If Benitez really wanted a prolific goalscorer he wouldn't had brought in Crouch in the summer.
