Clash of the titans - Viera vs gerrard- who is better?

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Postby stmichael » Mon Apr 19, 2004 2:54 pm

it's the question that is being most frequently asked on liverpool messageboards elsewhere and one which i have my own opinion on. who is better, vieira or gerrard? here's what i think.

vieira has an aura about him, and ability to run a game that gerrard is still to fully develop imo. plus, vieira has won championships, world cups, european championships and is still only 27. i feel that stevie g has everything vieira has plus more pace, a better passing range, and this season he has scored more goals. however the game on good friday proved that vieira still has the edge upstairs.

but by the 2006 world cup i feel that gerrard can be the best midfielder in europe. do you agree?

This is an old post resurrected from the dead, is it not?

Vieria still is the master, but there are parts of Gerrard's game that Vieira doesn't have and vice versa.

If Gerrard keeps plugging away and Liverpool improve, I have no doubt that he will reach Vieria's level in the next two years.

Viera. By a long way. Gerrard would get close if he had a better manager guiding him.

I think im the onyl one whos going to say Gerrard. Purely for the fact that ive never known a so called hard a$$ midfielder go down and cry so much when he is fowled.
Gerrard has the passion and the pace and passing range, Viera might have the extra yard in his head. does that mean that Teddy Sheringham is better than Owen?
I think not
thank you

I would rather have Gerrard on my team, he just needs 10 other players of his level..

I can still remember the days when we had two players of Gerrard's and Viera's ability in our midfield.

I wouldn't say Gerrard is faster than Vieira at all to be honest. Quicker turn of pace and better at running at opponents maybe but not flat out.

Vieira is alot more aggressive aswell. He simply eases and bullies people away from the ball. Vieira is also better at reading the game and playing the right pass and technically he is streets ahead of Stevey.

Stevey's a hell of a player but Vieira is in the elite.

Vieira is more a Didi Hamann type player, controls the centre of the pitch and does the ball winning where as Gerrard covers the whole pitch and mixes his game similar to Roy Keane at his best.

Vieira by a long shot.

Gerrard will improve and hopefully will get to Vieira's level.

I think Gerrard has the better all-round game, but needs to develop a bit more and refine his game. He could be the best midfielder in the world, he seems to be progressing even with Houllier in charge (in spite of more than because of IMO)

Ill second that! When his game is complete he will take some stopping! Viera is great too obviously..but he looks a lazy ba#ta#d at times

No contest, its Viera by a mile.A few years and Steven can reach that level, but not yet,and not with his present team mates.

Vieira. Just look at his trophies.

Gerrard will not develop further without a better manager and better players around him. If I was as good as Gerrard I would have been p#ssed off if I had to play alongside Murphy and Carragher. Midget Murphy is a disaster and two dead legs Carragher is awful.
