Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

We had a 'gentlemens agreement' in January then Benfica raised the price at the last minute which to me isn't a 'gentlemens agreement' in my eyes

LIVERPOOL target Simao Sabrosa has angered his Benfica bosses by saying he wants a move to a more competitive league.

And Anfield is still believed to be the Portuguese winger's preferred destination.

Sabrosa came within hours of a £10m move to Liverpool last summer. Benfica president Luis Filipe Vieira blocked the transfer as the player prepared to board a flight to England, after Benfica fans had reacted angrily to the proposed deal.

But Sabrosa has broken club rules by giving an interview to a cable TV network in Portugal and this may accelerate his departure.

He has been fined for his comments, just days after club president Vieira said: "Some day, Benfica will have to say farewell to Simao. We have a gentleman's agreement."

Liverpool are also still committed to the signing of Chilean winger Mark Gonzalez, who will visit the club at the end of the month.

A move for the Chilean international in July was held up over work permit problems, but he will now arrive next summer.

"Rafael Benitez is always calling me," said Gonzalez. "The last time we talked was 10 days ago. He asked me how I was feeling, if I was better from my injury. He is worried about my health.

"I don't have any problems to kick the ball as strong as always although I know I have lack of movement yet. I'm 80 or 90 per cent fit.

"They have to inform the exact date to me but I'm flying to England at the end of the month.

"It won't be easy to win a place in the line-up and if I achieve that, it won't be easy to maintain myself there, because Liverpool is such a competitive club that if I relax, there are two or three players who want my place."

About Gonzalez

From the Carlos Belmonte to Anfield, there's quite a big gap. If this lad who's young actually manages to impress for the very first moment in Anfield, I think that we'll be on front of a very classy player. I think more of him as a future man for the club, for next season or so, with patience. But I have the feel that many of you actually expect somebody who make dissapear our left wing troubles (correct me of I'm wrong) from the moment he arrives.

If he's able to make the gap to the premiere in a few games, I'll be astonished.

Benfica have revealed they will sell winger Simao Sabrosa to Liverpool in the January transfer window if the Reds come up with the right price.
President Luis Filipe Vieira said Simao would have already left had Liverpool offered them £12m for the 25-year-old.

"It is not in our plans to let players leave but if it has to happen, it will. If we get an offer too good to turn down we can't say no," said Vieira.

"For the amount of £12m, Simao would already have left Benfica."

They can p#ss right off 12 million for a player with 6 months left on his contract plus Cup Tied.
6 million plus Dudek take it or leave it.
There is no-one anywhere in the world at any stage who is any bigger or any better than this football club.

If he only had 6 months remaining on his contract then we could sign him staright off without any fee!!!!!!! He has more than 1 year remaining. Players within 1 year of theri contract can leave for nothing.

Benfica ready to sell Sabrosa to Liverpool for right price
First Published: Nov 16, 2005

Portugal forward Simao Sabrosa during the World Cup qualifying match against Estonia in September 2004. Benfica president Luis Filipe Vieira said the Portuguese side will sell Sabrosa to Liverpool in the January transfer period if the English side pay the right price.
Benfica will sell their international striker Simao Sabrosa to Liverpool in the January transfer period if the English side pay the right price, the president of the Portuguese champions has said.

"It is not in our plans to let players leave but if it has to happen in January, it will happen. If we get an offer that is too good to turn down we can't say no," Luis Filipe Vieira said late Tuesday.

Asked during an interview with state-owned television RTP if the right price would be the 18 million euros which Liverpool has reportedly offered Benfica for the player, Vieira said: "For that amount he would have already left."

The European champions tried to land Sabrosa over the summer and appeared to have struck an agreement with Benfica but the Portuguese club pulled the plug on the deal just before the end of the transfer period.

Liverpool had reportedly offered Benfica 12 million euros for the player at the time but the Portuguese side backed off over fears of a fan backlash.

But last week Vieira said Benfica would not block Sabrosa's exit if the player wanted to leave and the club's demands were met.

"Some day, Benfica will have to say farewell to Simao. We have a gentleman's agreement," he told Portuguese sports daily Record.

Wheres all this "Joaquin for £15m" come from!?! He's contacted until either 2008/10 and has a £40m release clause. F*cking forget getting Joaquin - Betis won't sell, and Rafa won't pay obscene amounts of money.

I think Moriantes and Crouch will be good for us and they will score a lot of goals when we have a right wing like Simao or Joaquin can put a lot of good crosses inside the box.

So rafa must concentrate to finish the story of the right wing and the defender before thinking to open a new story for any new striker.

That's not the point he was making, his point was that for all the watching you've done you still can't spell his bloody name right. SIMAO not SIMOA. :D

if simao come in jan, he will bring some balance to our squad but that the end of it...he just an average player.
i don think he will be our cristino ronaldo, robben or duff.
Maybe i'm wrong...but the question is he will need time to adjust to english game and we don need that.
