Well Zenden wont be playing he has picked up a thigh strain in training just like traore, but i guess the surprise mite be if rafa play baros who is in the match squad. Wonder if this means that we have given up hope of getting rid of him

i doubt very much Rafa will risk cuptieing him, the transfer window is til the end of august. Why risk it for a game we should breeze

Milan Baros and Antonio Barragan have both been called up to the Liverpool squad for Wednesday's Champions League qualifier in Sofia but Bolo Zenden has been ruled out of the trip through injury.
The Reds will travel to the Bulgarian capital on Tuesday morning in preparation for the third qualifying round first leg tie against CSKA.

Rafael Benitez confirmed today that Baros, who has been strongly linked with a move away from Anfield all summer and is yet to figure in European competition this season, will be part of the travelling party, as will highly-rated Spanish full-back Barragan - a recent signing from Seville.

Zenden, meanwhile, will stay behind at Melwood where he'll undergo treatment on a thigh injury he picked up in training. The injury is not thought to be serious and Benitez fully expects the Dutch international to be available for selection for Saturday's Premiership opener at Middlesbrough.

I hope this game turns out to be the easy game every1 says it will be, but we do only have cisse & moro fit no la tallec, crouch or FSP. So touch wood no injuries or shock scorelines then we wont need him, but if it comes 2 the stage we need a goal rafa will use him, even if it does cup-tie him the club progressing is the most important outcome not selling milan

The CSKA game looks like being far, far tougher than anything we've faced so far this pre-season but we're experienced enough now to grab a narrow win or draw in Bulgaria and see them off at Anfield. I must admit to being a bit concerned that our pre-season has been too easy - despite the fact we'll have played 5 competitive games before we take on Boro.

                                      Reina
Finnan                     Hypia            Carra              Risse

                              Sissoco           Alonso

                                          Gerrard
                                              |
        --------------- Cisse         |       Garcia-----------                                              |
                                     /        |         \
                                    /                     \
                                        Morientes

:rasp  :lookaround  :eyebrow

CSKA beat Botev 4-1 in the opening round of the Bulgarian championship on Saturday. The Reds' opponents appear in good form. They have some speed up front, and can play on the wings, but I think they're a bit suspect at the back

Reina/Carson

Finnan            Carra            Barragan/Hyppia             Warnock

                  Gerrard             Alonso/Sissoko

Potter                       Garcia                                      Riise

                                Cisse

Garcia is great attacker IMO, so that's why he'd play up there.
Warnock and Potter have the potential to be good players, they jsut need to play in more matches like these.

I'd have Reina between the sticks, but if we have a significant lead (2 goals) then I'd switch him with Carson, coz he needs to play more of these kind of matches.

Reina
    Finnan    Carragher  Hyypia   Warnock
                         Hamann
             Gerrard     Alonso    Riise
                           Garcia
                           Cisse

i can see this be the team, but also i think potter could be possibilty instead of garcia,
But do u remember last year against sofia, starting XI
                                          Kirkland
                          Josemi  carra   hyypia   Riise
                          Finnan  gerrard  hamann  kewell
                                       cisse baros
maybe if rafa played with two strikers agianst them which them seemed to sruggle with, with gerrard running on it could work.

high chance hamman will start in the middle as he brings stability, calm and experience, especially in tough and unfamiliar away eurpoean games. Baros is travelling with the squad, but dun really expect him to play at all. Expect Rafa to play a lone striker (cisse or moro) with gerrard coming in from deep and garcia in support. Risse should take over Zenden in LM with warnock at LB. Sissoko to be on the bench with Alonso pulling the strings in midfield. Rest of the positions should be relatively unchanged.

With Zenden rulled out with a small injury, that leaves Riise as a LM

.                        Reina

Finnan       Carragher       Hyypia      Warnock

                       Hamann

          Alonso    Gerrard       Riise

                     Luis Garcia

                       Cisse

Prefer Risse to all the other left midfielers TBH.

I prefer a cow to Riise to be honest. He can be effective but he's one trick pony with a powerful shot, that's pretty much it.

after reading up on cska id have to say we will meet our toughest game so far. experience will be required, for that reason id use ALL the big guns, ie hamann.j.c,sami,stevie,xabi etc. and up front id use cisse on his own. 4-1-4-1.

                             reina

finnan    carragher            hyypia         warnock

                            hamann

garcia      gerrard             alonso          riise

                             cisse

but make no bones.....as long as we score, id be happy with a draw from this, or a sneaky win.

Sorry mate Ronaldo isn't coming here so get over your "one trick pony" c.rap.  Risse's got the best positional sense, (a whole year under rafa proved this) has an end product, can offer curling and bullet free-kicks and can cover for the left back too.

But you probably dont understand any of this as you think Ronaldo plays for us.

I'm sorry but I'm not impressed by a player who keeps using the same "trick" everytime he takes on a defender. Which is pass the ball ahead of the defender, attempt to get around the defender to get to the ball. Nine times out of ten he fails, it can work against p1ss poor defenders but any average defender can read Riise easily.

Apart from a good shot, he has nothing else. He makes one descent cross after 152 attempts.

He can't do anything with his right foot, I understand he's a left winger but for fecks sake you can at least pass the ball with your right foot to a player in good position. There were many times last season when Riise had the ball on his right foot and blew his opportunity to score or blew the opportunitiy to pass the ball to a team-mate in a scoring position, all because the ball was on his right foot and not his left.

Whats your alternative then? Traore?

Risse is the best we have by default.

Zenden still needs time to settle with his new team mates, coach, tactics etc.  Kewell is half baked and Garcia can't play in every position that people seem to have a niggling problem with.
