Away from home first and Sofia aren't bad so I wouldn't take any unnecessary risks such as playing Potter or starting Riise in defence as he's looked pretty shaky there pre-season.

                                 Reina

Finnan            Carra            Hyypia             Warnock

                     Sissoko        Alonso

Garcia                      Gerrard                    Zenden/Riise

                                Cisse

Gerrard's been in good goalscoring form so far so I'd play him fairly far forward.  I'm looking forward to seeing what Sissoko, Alonso and Gerrard play like as a 3-man midfield

couldnt you have the same formation but with finnan pushing up instead of riise. Finnans defencive contributions should be able to make of for the lack of defensive qualities in Garcia.

That's not a bad idea but if Finnan pushes forward too much, he won't have the necessary pace to come back into his position if the opposition is counter-attacking

My selection.

hamann over sissoko - his control will lose the ball to much

I am for fielding the strongest team in a 4-5-1 formation with Warnock at left back and Hamann holding the midfield, Garcia on the right and Cisse alone up-front.

Only concern is the right midfield will not be maximised icient as Garcia is not an out-and-out RM but neither is Potter. Garcia is a better bet and this will free Gerrard to rampage forward. Sissoko can come on for Hamann later in the game.

personally if we've pretty much got the tie wrapped up after the away leg i'd like to see us experiment with a 4-3-3 at home and see how we get on. chelsea have had great success with it and even manure have reverted to it after years of playing 4-4-2. we just don't have the personnel to play a 4-4-2 at the moment because our wide men don't have the pace to go past anyone.

                                     reina

       finnan         carragher        hyypia           riise

                                    sissoko
                        gerrard              alonso

          garcia                                           zenden

                                     cisse

Yes Manu have reverted back to the 4-3-3.

But im not sure how Liverpool with do with this system. ManU have Ronaldo | Giggs | Park and Rooney (can play as a winger) who are all quick and 3 of them are natural wingers. We have Duff | Roben | Phillips and Cole (can play as a winger) again all quick and 3 are natural wingers.

Liverpool have Zenden who will do well in that role, Garcia who IMO is better at the tip of a Daimond or just behind the striker, but could also play wide - and thats it. There are no other players who can play in that role, so to change the system of a team with only 2 players (who arnt even natural wingers) to support the system, isnt a good idea and I dont think Rafa will use it.

However a 4-3-3 quickly changes into a 4-2-3-1 - which is something I can see you play, but not the actual 4-3-3.

....................................Reina

.........Finnan.......Carragher.......Hyypia.........Risse

....................Hamman..................Alonso

..........Garcia..................Garrard..................Zenden

......................................Cisse

This would give Garcia and Zenden space to explore, and would also cut down their expectation of operating on by the lines. You would see them cutting in and not playing wide out.

Some might say this is the same as 4-3-3, well it is in a way, only here the wide men do not play down the line, there is more of cutting in as opposed to a 4-3-3 where the player has the ability to cut in as well as play out wide - whichever suits the attacking move.

If I was Rafa, I'd be wary of doing a Celtic. We can't chuck too many into attack as our defense is still pulling it's socks up, whereas CSKA are already gelled  (by all accounts).

.                               Reina
         Finnan                                    Riise
                 Carragher       Hyypia
                 Hamman         Alonso
         Garcia                                  Zenden
                          Gerrard
                            Cisse

We played well with only one upfront last season, and although I expect we'll see Crouch and Cisse starting, I think that this is good enough to get us some away goals, AND keep a clean sheet.

Reina

Finnan           Carragher            Hypia            Riise

                              Hamann
Garcia         Alonso                     Gerrard       Zenden

                               Cisse

i'd like us to play this too - ends up being very similar to the 2nd half in Istanbul but with a solid 4 vs 3 in defence. think the key here is that you do not necessarily need the wide men to get to the by line a such but need good fluid movement through midfield retaining posession and pressuring the opposition higher up the pitch. the wide men contribute by coming in field etc - crosses can come from slightly deeper positions from the full backs with gerrard/wide men in the box supporting cisse.

remember there was some statistic about how arsenal hardly ever cross, neither do chelsea too much in a 4-3-3 - not that i'm sayng i love the way they play or anything but just think played well it can be very effective, especially away from home.

I am just hoping there is no trouble reguarding Michael Shields, with these games this is a very trcky tie for us indeed, the last thing we need is getting another ban.
We are the best supporters in the world lets keep it that way.
I am more worried about fans reactions than the actual game with feelings running high over the wrongfull conviction of a Liverpool fan.
There is no-one anywhere in the world at any stage who is any bigger or any better than this football club.

I can't see rafa playing a 4-5-1 formation at home - its too defensive, maybe away but seeing as the first game is at Anfield i reckon:

                 Reina

Finnan  Carragher  Hyypia  Riise

Garcia  Gerrard  Alonso  Zenden

          Morientes  Cisse
